• Ford is recalling 128,616 Fusions and Milans due to potentially faulty wheel studs.
  • According to the NHTSA, wheel studs could crack, leading to wheels falling off.
  • Ford will inspect and, if necessary, replace wheel studs and brake discs under the recall.

Ford is recalling nearly 130,000 midsize Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion sedans due to faulty wheel studs that could cause the wheels to fall off the vehicle.

The automaker recently announced the recall, which was in response to an inquiry from the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the NHTSA, the recall affects 2010 and 2011 Fusion and Milan models equipped with 17-inch steel wheels. The agency says the wheels may have been equipped with faulty wheel studs that could crack, causing uncomfortable vibration or even the loss of a wheel.

According to Ford, Fusion and Milan models affected by the recall were manufactured between April 1 and April 30, 2009, and December 1, 2009 and November 13, 2010. The automaker says the recall will involve an inspection of the sedan's brake discs and lug nuts, and will include a replacement of either or both components if necessary. Ford says the recall is scheduled to begin January 24, though it notes that drivers of the 128,616 affected vehicles can call the automaker at 1-866-436-7332 with questions.

The Fusion sedan is one of Ford's top sellers and among the overall best-selling vehicles on the market. Last month, the automaker sold more than 18,000 units of the sedan, trailing Japanese rivals like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima by around 3,000 units. So far in 2011, Ford recorded more than 200,000 Fusion sales, placing it behind the F-series pickup and Escape compact SUV among the automaker's best-selling vehicles.

What it means to you:

If you own a 2010 or 2011 Fusion or Milan, expect to get a recall notice in the mail early next year.
