• Reverse lights may not correctly illuminate in affected vehicles
  • The recall affects 10,500 Ford Expedition, Mustang and F-150 models and Lincoln Navigators
  • Ford will begin contacting owners of affected vehicles on June 25

Ford is recalling more than 10,000 units of several recent models because of problems calibrating the reverse lights and the transmission. The automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced the recall, which affects 2012-13 Mustang, 2011-12 F-150, and 2012 Expedition models as well as the 2012 Navigator from Ford's upscale Lincoln division.

According to NHTSA, affected vehicles' transmission range sensors may have been incorrectly calibrated by Ford. The federal government agency says the faulty sensor could cause the reverse lights not to illuminate when the shift lever is placed into reverse gear. As a result, pedestrians or other motorists may not realize affected vehicles are reversing, increasing the risk of an accident.

Ford told federal regulators it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries stemming from the problem. The automaker also noted that vehicles affected by the issue will not properly display an illuminated R in their instrument clusters when shifted into reverse.

Ford says it will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by mail on June 25. Letters will urge owners to come into dealerships for replacement of the potentially faulty transmission range sensor with a new, correctly calibrated part. Owners with questions are advised to call Ford at 866-436-7332 or NHTSA's recall hotline at 888-327-4236.

Two of the models being recalled are among Ford's most popular. Last month, the automaker sold nearly 48,000 units of its full-size F-Series pickup - a lineup that includes more variants than just the F-150 that was recalled - while the Mustang remains one of the most popular sporty cars in the United States with nearly 8,000 units sold in April.

What it means to you: If you own one of the recalled models, use extra care when reversing until the recall can be performed on your vehicle.
