- The recall affects 52,615 units of the 2007 and 2008 TL
- The action adds to an earlier recall that affected 273,000 units
- Owners will be contacted by mail beginning on June 15
Acura is recalling nearly 53,000 units of its mid-size TL sedan due to a risk of engine fires. The federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Honda, Acura's parent company, recently announced the recall, which includes the luxury brand's base-level 2008 TL sedan and its sporty 2007 and 2008 Type-S variants.
According to NHTSA, the recall is necessary because prolonged high engine temperatures may lead to deterioration of the TL's power steering hose. The agency says the hose's failure could cause power steering fluid to leak onto the sedan's catalytic converter, leading to engine smoke and, in the worst cases, potentially to an underhood fire.
The recall is Acura's second action aimed at curbing potential engine fires in its third-generation TL, which was produced from 2004 to 2008. The first, announced in March 2008, affected a whopping 273,000 units of the sedan. Acura initially thought some 2007-08 TL Type-S and base-level 2008 TL models were unaffected by the issue, but the automaker recently received two reports of fluid leaks in those models, proving they may have defective engine parts and could be susceptible to potential fires as well. In April 2010, Acura also recalled nearly 167,000 units of its entry-level 2004-08 TSX sedan to fix a similar problem.
Acura says it will begin mailing recall notices to owners of affected TL models on June 15. According to the automaker, mailings will urge owners to bring their vehicles to an Acura dealership for service, where a heat-resistant power steering hose will be installed in place of the current part free of charge.
Despite the potential for engine fires and knowledge of two fluid leaks, Acura says it has not received any reports of damage or injuries stemming from its latest round of TL recalls. Owners with questions can call Acura at 800-382-2238 or visit the automaker's recall website at recall.acura.com. Owners can also call NHTSA's recall hotline at 888-327-4236.
What it means to you: If your third-generation TL hasn't been recalled yet, it likely will be soon.
