• Recall covers 778,000 2006-2011 RAV4 and 2010 HS 250h models
  • A possible rear suspension failure could cause an accident
  • Toyota is working on a solution, but concerned drivers should contact a dealer

Toyota is recalling 778,000 units of the popular RAV4 compact SUV and the HS 250h sedan from its upscale Lexus brand. The automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced the recall, which affects 2006 through 2011 RAV4 models as well as the 2010 Lexus HS 250h.

According to the automaker, the recall is necessary due to a possible rear suspension failure. The automaker says that if the nuts on the rear suspension arm are not tightened after a rear-wheel alignment, the suspension may become loose. This could lead to rust and a total separation of the rear suspension arm, and might ultimately cause an accident.

While Toyota says an official recall is on the way, it's still working on a solution to the problem. Until it mails recall notices, the automaker cautions any drivers who hear unusual noises from their rear suspension to contact a dealership. The automaker says it will reimburse drivers who paid for the repair already.

The recall affects about 760,000 RAV4 models, as well as 18,000 Lexus HS 250h models. Toyota says the recall also affects 100,000 RAV4 and HS 250h models in Canada. The recall is the outcome of an investigation into complaints of rear suspension failure. Toyota says four complaints came from drivers travelling at speeds of 35 mph or greater. There was no news of any injuries that resulted from the defect.

The automaker will mail recall notices as soon as it develops a solution. Drivers with questions can call its recall hotline at 1-800-331-4331. Likewise, HS 250h owners with questions about the recall can contact Lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

What it means to you: If you own one of these vehicles, be on the lookout for an abnormal rear-end noise, and if a recall notice arrives in the mail, don't delay in having your RAV4 or HS 250h repaired.
