2002-2005 Audi A4 - Used Car Review

Host: The 2002-2005 Audi A4 is a standout when it comes to styling, performance and handling, with Audi’s legendary Quattro All Wheel Drive ready to deal with just about anything the weather can throw at it…. Hi, I’m Presilah Nuñez.

C-Host: And I’m Michael Fisher and you’re watching AutoTrader’s Used Car Review of the 2002 to 2005 5-passenger Audi A4.  The ’02 to ’05 A4 is available as either a sedan, or Avant wagon. It displays all of the styling and capabilities of a well-crafted European luxury car… and then some...

H: And that means that the 2002 to 2005 A4’s hold their resale value well, which ALSO means that you may find them pricey when shopping for a good used one…which competes with the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Cadillac CTS.

C:  The A4’s styling is still considered elegant and stately, today.  Just as handsome though, is the interior.

H: The base model comes nicely appointed with dual zone climate control, a 10-speaker stereo with six-disc CD changer, power windows and locks, and keyless entry.  Overall, a very nice interior.  But, a big part of the A4 story is how it performs in wintry conditions.  Ready?

C: Let’s go!

C: The A4 is available with two engines, a base 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4, and a 3-liter V6. The turbocharged 4-cylinder puts out 170 horsepower and you can get it with either a 5-speed manual or continuously variable transmission or CTV, and standard front wheel drive. The I 4 makes for good acceleration and great fuel economy: up to 20 miles per hour city and 29 miles per gallon highway.

The 3-liter V6 puts out 220 horsepower and, in front wheel drive form, comes with the same 6-speed manual or a CVT. This engine can also be selected with Quattro all wheel drive mated to a 5-speed automatic, like we’re driving today. That’s where this car really shines, regardless of road conditions.

H: And there’s not much of a drop-off in fuel economy either; up to 18 miles per gallon city and 26 highway.

C: Safety history is something to consider when looking at any used car and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 02-05 A4 its highest rating of GOOD in all crash test categories.

H: It handles great, is safe to drive but, like any car, the A4 is not without its blemishes.

C:  That’s right. The Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall on the 2003 A4 for a defective fuel pump on both engines. AutoTrader has also conducted research on several notable consumer sites and found more than a few complaints surrounding the early continuously variable transmissions, which are costly to repair.

H: Like all premium European sedans, parts and service can become an expensive part of owning an A4, so best bet is to steer clear of the CVT-equipped models.

C: Whether you’re looking for a European luxury car with good fuel economy or the power, handling and sure-footedness of Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, there’s a lot to like about the 2002-2005 Audi A4. For AutoTrader, I’m Michael Fisher
