2003-2007 Honda Accord - Used Car Review

Host: When it comes to family sedans, the reliability and quality of the Honda Accord sets it apart in a hotly contested marketplace. Hi I’m Prisilah Nuñez.

Co-Host: And I’m Michael Fisher.

HOST: And you’re watching Auto Trader’s used car review on the 2003-2007 Honda Accord. So, Michael, when I hear Honda, I think ‘reliability’ and the Accord certainly fits that image.

CO-HOST: Absolutely. The ’03 to 07 Accord is one of the most dependable and, as a result, one of the best selling sedans of all time.

CO-HOST: The only down side is that the Accord’s well-known reputation  means you’ll pay dearly when buying a well cared for used Accord…but you’ll also be getting piece of mind, something that every used car buyer dreams about!  Of course, the same can be said for its direct competition, the Toyota Camry.

CO-HOST:  The Accord is pretty tame, styling-wise and the same goes for the interior. Functional and straight-forward.  Your base DX model comes with the standard array of power features, a CD player, and a rear window defroster. The LX adds keyless entry, A/C, cruise control, a rear trunk pass-through and power mirrors. In 2004 the EX got standard front side airbags, a power driver’s seat, sunroof, and steering wheel audio controls.

HOST:  One important feature that you should look for if you live up north in a snowy or icy climate is traction control, which you can get on the 2003 LX model and it became standard on all V6 Accords in 2004.

CO-HOST:  Now if you also want a near-luxury experience, the EX-L has leather seats, dual zone climate control, and heated front seats.

HOST: Let’s talk about the negatives.

CO-HOST: Well, according to CarComplaints.com, Epinions and HondaAccordForums.com., one of the most common complaints, believe it or not, is around the CD player failing to play, not playing MP3’s and failing to eject!  Let’s see how this one does…

HOST: Hey!  We have a winner!

CO-HOST: 2004 and newer Accords got Satellite radio and more models are available with side curtain airbags. V6 models also got traction control in ‘04. In ’05 the entire Accord lineup got standard front-side and side-curtain airbags. And in 2006 the Accord got a slight visual update and a small boost in horsepower.

HOST: Since we’re talking horsepower, the (this?) base 2.4-liter inline-4 is one of the quietest, most refined engines in the world.  But with only 160 horsepower, the flipside is that it struggles to get up to speed on highways.

It DOES get great fuel economy- 26 miles per gallon city, 34 highway.

Honda offers a 240 horsepower 3-liter V6 and that means much better acceleration   while still delivering respectable fuel economy- 20 miles per gallon city, and 29 highway.

CO-HOST:  When shopping for a good used Accord you’ll want to be careful about the ’03 and ’04 models. They were recalled for possible defects in the transmission that could cause it to lock up.  Also, in 2005 there were recalls for defective wiring that may lead to the fuel pump losing power.  Make sure the one you are looking at has been seen by a Honda dealer.  A recall means that the dealer MUST repair the problem, with no cost to consumer.

CO-HOST:  So, if safety is at the top of your list, you’d have to go with the 2004 and later EX V6. They have standard side curtain air bags and traction control. If price is your top priority, I’d recommend either the Accord LX or EX with the inline-4. Either way, you should get good, reliable…and comfortable transportation.  I’m Michael Fisher.
