Cadillac has shown in recent years that it can make a European-style sport sedan, but how about an old-fashioned American highway cruiser? One thing the Cadillacs of yesteryear never lacked was power, and that's another tradition that the XTS proudly carries on. The standard 3.6-liter V6 pumps out 304 horsepower, and you'll feel it when you step on the gas. But unlike those thirsty old Cadillac barges, the XTS is also surprisingly fuel efficient, returning up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway.

4. High-Tech Cabin

You'll know this isn't your grandfather's Cadillac the first time you see the dashboard. The XTS features the CUE infotainment system, which bundles phone, music and optional navigation functions into an 8-inch touchscreen that basically operates like an iPad. For an old-fashioned cruiser, this is cutting-edge stuff. And the best part is, it's included even on the entry-level Standard trim level, so every XTS owner can get in on the action. Bose audio is also included, though the Premium and Platinum trims come with a full 14 speakers versus the standard eight. Those trims have standard navigation and a beautiful 12.3-in configurable gauge cluster, too.

5. Exceptional Style

No discussion of a modern Cadillac is complete without talking about the styling. To our eyes, the XTS does a neat balancing act, combining Cadillac's current design language with the timeless proportions of a large luxury sedan. It's a good-looking car, especially with the Platinum's 20-in chrome-trimmed wheels.

The 2013 Cadillac XTS is at once a blast from the past and a strong step forward. It's a must-drive luxury sedan for folks in search of that perfect mix.
