Pros: Reasonably priced; highly capable

Cons: Lackluster performance; aging design; few features

What's New: With an all-new model on the way for 2014, the Silverado is largely unchanged for 2013.

The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado is a full-size pickup available in Work Truck, LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. This overview focuses on the Work Truck, which is primarily aimed at commercial buyers looking for a no-frills truck for towing, hauling and performing various other jobs.

The Silverado Work Truck is the pickup's base model. It's offered in three configurations: regular cab, extended cab and a 4-door Crew Cab variant. All three come standard with only a short list of features that includes steel wheels, vinyl seating and manual windows and mirrors. The Silverado Work Truck's only luxuries are standard air conditioning and cruise control. An AM/FM radio is also standard, but a CD player is a $170 optional extra.

All Silverado Work Truck models come with a standard 195-horsepower 4.3-liter V6. Only shoppers who truly need the lowest-level capabilities should get that engine, as it struggles to motivate the full-size pickup. Buyers can upgrade to a 302-hp 4.8-liter V8 or a 315-hp 5.3-liter V8, though the optional 6.2-liter V8 is reserved for Silverado LT and LTZ models.

As expected, fuel economy isn't great -- partly because of the Work Truck's standard 4-speed automatic. Even with the V6 and 2-wheel drive, the pickup returns just 15 miles per gallon city/20 mpg hwy. Four-wheel drive drops fuel economy to 14 mpg city/18 mpg hwy. Interestingly, the 5.3-liter V8 returns the best mileage, at 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy.

Chevrolet Silverado Work Truck models start around $24,500, which places it on the very low end of the full-size pickup pricing spectrum. That price is for a regular-cab model, while an extended-cab Work Truck starts at $28,600. A Work Truck with the brand's 4-door Crew Cab configuration is $32,700 with shipping. Four-wheel drive is optional on all models.
