Pros: Reasonably priced; very practical; simple design
Cons: Tepid performance; aging look and feel; few frills
What's New: With an all-new model on the way for 2014, the Sierra is largely unchanged for 2013.
The GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck offered in five trim levels: Work Truck, SL, SLE, SLT and the upscale Denali trim. This overview focuses on the Sierra Work Truck, which is mainly aimed at commercial truck buyers looking for a no-frills vehicle to get a job done.
As a result, don't expect the Sierra Work Truck to come with many features. While air conditioning and cruise control are standard, shoppers have to pay extra for options like power locks, keyless entry, GM's OnStar telematics system and even a CD player -- a feature that costs $170 above the truck's base price. Even cloth upholstery is unavailable, as the Sierra Work instead includes vinyl seats.
The good news is the lack of features means pricing is very reasonable. Two-wheel-drive, regular cab Sierra models start around $23,000 with shipping. Extended Cab models are around $27,300, while the 4-door Sierra Work Truck Crew Cab is priced from $31,300. Four-wheel drive is optional on all three body styles.
Also optional on all three body styles is V8 power. We recommend considering that option, as the truck's standard 195-horsepower 4.3-liter V6 isn't very spry -- especially considering it's mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is also subpar, as the truck returns just 15 miles per gallon city/20 mpg highway even with 2-wheel drive.
GMC offers two available V8 powertrains. The first, a 302-hp 4.8-liter V8, returns 15 mpg city/19 mpg hwy -- a small penalty for a huge power boost. The second engine is the brand's 5.3-liter V8, which makes 315 hp and returns 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy.
The Sierra Work Truck can be a great choice for commercial buyers who don't need -- or want -- any bells and whistles. But unless you get a good deal, we recommend waiting on a new truck if possible, as the all-new 2014 GMC Sierra will be out shortly and priced similarly.
