Pros: Incredible capability; very practical; great for towing and hauling

Cons: Not much equipment; gas mileage could be better

What's New: While light-duty Sierra models are redesigned for 2014, heavy-duty models get only one revision: the truck's extended cab body style is no longer offered.

The 2014 GMC Sierra HD is a heavy-duty, full-size pickup truck aimed at shoppers who need a vehicle that goes above and beyond traditional truck capabilities. Two versions are offered: the Sierra 2500HD, and the more muscular Sierra 3500HD. From there, drivers can choose among four trims: the Work Truck, the SLE, the SLT and the Denali. This overview covers the Work Truck, which is aimed at commercial shoppers looking for a great pickup for job site duties.

If you're interested in a Sierra 2500HD Work Truck, expect pricing to start around $33,400 with shipping. The price increases to $34,900 for the 3500HD, which offers greater payload capacity. Drivers can choose from two cab styles (standard and 4-door crew cab), two bed lengths and two drivetrains (2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive). The 3500HD model also offers a "dually" option that provides "dual" rear wheels on each side for improved payload.

As for engines, the trucks give buyers a choice, too. Both 2500HD and 3500HD models include a 360-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 as standard equipment. But for those who want extra capacity, there's a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8. While it only makes 397 hp, torque is an immense 765 lb-ft -- perfect for towing heavy loads.

But while the 2014 GMC Sierra HD Work Truck lineup boasts intense capabilities, the pickups don't include many gadgets. Think crank windows, manual mirrors and an AM/FM stereo -- there isn't a CD player. Of course, shoppers can select an upgraded stereo, power windows and other niceties from the truck's options list.

Some shoppers, however, won't bother. They'll just get a base-level Sierra HD for all their "dirty job" needs. But regardless of how you equip your Sierra HD, the truck is certainly among the best workhorses on the market.
