The redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis is on sale now, and it's the most sophisticated and advanced sedan that the automaker has ever sold in America. Before discussing the differences between the new 2015 Genesis and the retiring 2014 Genesis, let's clarify that we're talking about the 4-door sedan version, not the 2-door Genesis Coupe. The coupe and the sedan are vastly different cars, and with the debut of the redesigned 2015 Genesis sedan, they're even more different.
Now, with that bit of housekeeping handled, let's dive into the details that differentiate the old Genesis from the new 2015 Hyundai Genesis.
With the debut of the 2015 Genesis, Hyundai pivots in terms of its design language. The sleek new Genesis sits on a longer wheelbase than before, features shorter front and rear overhangs and boasts a more dramatic rearward positioning of the passenger cabin to give the car a leaner, more athletic appearance. Fresh detailing includes new 3-dimensional, hexagonal grille styling, as well as new LED front and rear lighting and redesigned aluminum wheels.
Compared to the previous-generation Genesis, the new 2015 model is the more modern-looking vehicle, delivering undeniable visual cues that underscore the car's dramatic upgrades.
Boasting the largest interior in the mid-luxury-sedan class, the 2015 Hyundai Genesis continues its predecessor's reputation for delivering more cabin space than the competition. Additionally, the automaker says its engineers focused intently on reducing noise, vibration and harshness (not that there was much of it to start with).
For 2015, Hyundai has simplified the Genesis model's interior design, improved the switch gear and added additional, more flexible storage areas designed to accommodate modern mobile electronics. Seat designs are new, featuring additional padding, revised support structures and a greater range of adjustment. As is expected in a mid-luxury sedan, the new 2015 Genesis is available with numerous upgrades, including soft, premium leather and available matte wood trim.
While the previous Genesis also offered a roomy, comfortable and elegant interior, the difference with the new car -- as we'll see -- is that the 2015 Genesis is loaded with new technology.
While the engines that Hyundai installed in the new 2015 Genesis represent evolutions of the previous 3.8-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8, they're installed in a new platform constructed primarily of high-strength steel that provides greater stiffness and rigidity. The V6 generates 311 horsepower and the V8 makes 420 hp, and both engines are revised to deliver their torque across a broader rev range.
A newly refined 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters continues to feed the power to the car's rear wheels, but for 2015 the Genesis is available for the first time with a variable active torque-split all-wheel-drive system in order to expand the Genesis model's appeal in snowbelt states. Intelligent Drive Mode Select technology adjusts the car's drivetrain to one of four driver-selected modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow.
Hyundai also worked hard to improve the 2015 Genesis model's steering and suspension in order to make the luxury sedan's ride and handling reflective of its athletic design. In addition to installing a new multi-link rear suspension, Hyundai engineers tuned the Genesis on a variety of racecourses around the world, including Germany's grueling Nürburgring. A continuously damping control suspension with Normal and Sport settings is available on models equipped with the V8 engine. The new steering delivers better feel and improved stability compared to the old car.
Clearly, in terms of driving dynamics, the redesigned 2015 Hyundai Genesis trounces the old model.
Hyundai says that when carbon dioxide levels increase within a car's interior, the driver gets drowsy, so the company makes a CO2 sensor standard equipment in the 2015 Genesis. It works with the climate control system to reduce CO2 levels, with the goal of keeping the driver alert.
Another new feature for the redesigned Genesis is an automatic vehicle hold system. Pull up to an intersection with a red light or come to a complete stop in traffic, and automatic vehicle hold allows the driver to release the brake pedal while waiting for cars ahead to continue their journey. It holds the Genesis in place until the driver steps on the accelerator pedal.
Hyundai also installs a standard smart trunk system on the new Genesis. Approach the car with an armful of packages, and this system automatically opens the trunk if the driver stands within a certain distance of the bumper for three seconds. The system detects the car's smart key in the driver's pocket or purse and opens the trunk.

With this car, Hyundai introduces its Intelligent Assistant app system. Hyundai continues its technological advancements in the area of safety. The new Genesis is equipped with three years of automatic collision-notification service, which springs into action if the airbags deploy in order to speed rescuers to the scene of the accident. Beyond this, though, the new Genesis can be optioned with a long list of new safety technologies.
Blind spot monitoring and lane-departure warning systems issue haptic-feedback warnings through the steering wheel. The blind spot monitoring system displays visual warnings, including in the optional head-up display, while the lane-departure warning system includes a lane-change assist function that warns of traffic rapidly approaching in adjacent lanes, as well as an autonomous, driver-adjustable lane-keeping assist function.
The new Genesis is also available with automatic emergency braking, a first for Hyundai. This system includes a forward-collision warning system that operates at speeds between 50 miles per hour and 112 mph, and a collision-mitigation system that can autonomously brake the car at speeds between 5 mph and 50 mph. Additional safety options include emergency-steering support mode, rear cross-traffic alert and high-beam assist technology.
The previous-generation Hyundai Genesis was a good car at a great value, and that continues to be the case when considering one that's still sitting on a dealer's lot or is available as a used car. Undeniably, though, the redesigned 2015 Genesis represents a massive improvement on all fronts while continuing to deliver the bang for the buck that it always has.
