A good navigation system has become what a CD player was in the 80s: something you just have to have.
Chevrolet MyLink, the spiffy infotainment system on a number of 2013 and 2014 models, won't just get you where you need to go, it'll also add the bells and whistles to make any trip, well, worth the trip.
The system's big, bold font is the first thing that'll catch your eye. The bright lettering on the 7-inch color touchscreen display makes it simple to read and thus less of a distraction as you zip to your summer vacation spot. Fewer buttons cut down further on that fumbling around as you drive. The screen is customizable, so you can drag your favorite functions (from phone numbers to type of music to a particular radio station) front and center for prime accessibility. They'll appear on the screen once your compatible smartphone is connected. It operates via voice control, too.
Fire up the system via Bluetooth streaming audio or connect your mobile device through the USB port to listen to your most-loved playlists. Like other infotainment systems, Chevrolet MyLink works with tunes apps such as Pandora, Stitcher Smart Radio and SiriusXM.
iPhone users get the added safety of Siri Eyes Free, an iOS app that lets you complete such tasks as composing text and emails and storing contacts on your phone entirely via Siri's voice command.
Given it's officially summer travel season, getting a leg up on navigation may be just what an overwhelmed vacationer needs. And this is where MyLink really stands out. It's BringGo app (specifically designed for the Chevrolet Spark) simplifies getting from point A to point B, and all of those little detours in between. Available on the 2013 Sonic, 2013 Spark and 2014 Spark EV, it has several standout features, including turn-by-turn directions, 3-D maps with lane suggestions, route information with alternate map views, fuel cost and an environmental driving profile.
It also has the Where Am I? locator, local search via Google and scores of points of interest to keep the family happily engaged. You'll also score live traffic data to keep abreast of crash reports, lane closures and alternate routes.
Kinda makes getting there more than half the fun.
