Just when you thought you had the smartest gadgets on the planet to help you find the hottest vacation spot, short-cut to work, and track down the ideal anniversary gift, the folks at Jaguar Land Rover are developing a doozy: a self-learning intelligent car.
This futuristic vehicle will send you a text message to alert you of heavy traffic near your kids' afternoon baseball game, automatically cool your ride after a rigorous gym session, and provide a number of other perks.
At the core of the system is the on-board Smart Assistant -- a virtual buddy whose purpose is to carry out scores of functions so drivers can focus on getting from point A to B safely and distraction-free.
Assistant to the Rescue
The main draw is the car's self-learning capability, thanks to the automaker's innovations in artificial-intelligence techniques and learning-algorithm software that recognizes who is in the car, what they like and how they drive. The system learns to predict driver behavior and controls many daily driving chores, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road.
In a statement, Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology for Jaguar Land Rover, explains what sets the system apart: "Up until now, most self-learning car research has only focused on traffic or navigation prediction. We want to take this a significant step further, and our new learning algorithm means information learnt about you will deliver a completely personalized driving experience and enhanced driving pleasure."
The intelligent car will recognize the driver by the smartphone in his or her pocket, and by the time you've opened the car door, the mirrors, steering wheel and seat settings will all be set to your preferences. No more chilly morning commutes or blistering-hot errand runs.
The supersmart car will also examine your schedule for the day and preset the navigation based on road conditions, which will help you avoid traffic snarls. It will also predict your next destination based on what you have going on your schedule that day.
Self-Learning Gets an A+
The intelligent ride will also know if you are off to spin class and will have learned that you prefer a certain temperature on the way to class to help warm up and a cooler temperature on your way home.
If you're toting the kids to school, the car will recognize each passenger and provide everyone with his or her own preferred infotainment option. Smart Assistant will also text you helpful reminders before you've even left the house -- perfect for chaotic Mondays blurred by early-morning alarm clocks and not enough caffeine.
Aside from acting as the digital assistant you've always needed, the self-learning car will also be able to understand how you drive in a range of traffic conditions and on different types of roads. With Auto Adaptive Cruise Control, the car will be able to apply these learned distance settings and acceleration profiles to automated cruise control.
No word yet on when Jaguar Land Rover's intelligent car will be making your life a whole lot brainier.
