Intro: Named for its "horizontally-opposed "boxer" engine, and its two seat "roadster" configuration, the 2011 Porsche Boxster retains a winning formula first introduced in 1997.
Amanda: Hi, I'm Amanda.
Patrick: And I'm Patrick. And you're watching Auto Trader's new car review of the 2011 Porsche Boxster Roadster.
Patrick: For 2011, most of the Boxster lineup remains unchanged, with the exception of the new race-inspired Boxster Spyder.
Amanda: The mid-engine, rear wheel drive Boxster is offered in three models, the base model Boxster is powered by a 255 horsepower 2.9-liter Flat-6, while the up-rated Boxster S is equipped with a 310 horsepower 3.4-liter Flat-6.
Patrick: At the top of the lineup is the new Boxster Spyder equipped with a 320 horsepower 3.4-liter V6 engine. The Spyder's two distinctive haunches on the rear deck, cap off a design that's as at home on the racetrack as it is on the freeway. And the Spyder's completely removable, manual cloth top makes for a lighter car that also looks great!
Amanda: All Boxster's come standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. I'd recommend an upgrade, though, to the optional 7-speed PDK double-clutch automated manual gearbox. It lets even the most average driver, like me, make shifts faster than any pro.
Patrick: The Boxster is pretty quick. The base Boxster can go from zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds while the Spyder is capable of reaching 60 miles per hour in as little as 4.9 seconds. Top speed for the Boxster S is right around 165 miles per hour.
Amanda: I wouldn't want to pay THAT speeding ticket!
Amanda: The Boxster comes with a long list of standard features like leather power reclining bucket seats, this nice 3-spoke leather-wrapped telescoping steering wheel, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and hand-brake grip.
Patrick: Thanks to the mid-engine design, the Boxster gives you two cargo compartments? one at the front of the car and another in back. You get a total of around 10 cubic feet of storage, which is actually more than a lot of small sedans.
Amanda: The instrument panel includes this racing inspired center-mounted tachometer, a speedometer that actually reads up to 175 miles per hour, and readouts for oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temp, fuel level, outside temp, trip odometer, clock and trip computer.
Patrick: Dash-mounted pop-out cup holders, two auxiliary power outlets, and this handy center storage compartment really make the most of this classic roadster's interior.
Amanda: The Boxster's steering response and handling is really world class. Few other cars let you feel so connected to the car and the road.
Patrick: Of course you wouldn't expect anything less from Porsche!
Amanda: Right. And the firmly tuned suspension and solid 4-wheel anti-lock brakes work nicely with Porsche's Stability Management system to deliver a safe and exhilarating driving experience.
Patrick: Like most soft-top roadsters, noise levels are a bit high, and although there's plenty of legroom, shoulder space for a larger person may be a little tight.
Amanda: Feels good to me!
Patrick: That's because you're not a LARGER person. Now if you want to personalize your Boxster, you can choose from a long list of option packages from sound systems to design packages and performance features.
Amanda: With this level of performance and a cloth top, safety is a big consideration.
Patrick: True?Every Boxster comes with lots of standard safety features including, automatic brake differential, traction control, a crumple-zone body structure, a tire pressure monitoring system, a reinforced passenger compartment and a full array of air bags.
Amanda: With the base model starting at $47,600, the S model at $58,000 and the rang-topping Spyder at $62,200, top-down cruising in a 2011 Porsche Boxster may be far from some folk's price range but never from their dreams. I'm Amanda.
