Pros: Useful and practical; exceptional towing and hauling capabilities
Cons: Poor fuel economy; bare-bones interior
What's New: Although the light-duty Chevrolet Silverado is redesigned for 2014, heavy-duty models get just one change: The extended cab body style is no longer available.
The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD is a heavy-duty pickup for drivers who ask more from a truck than a light-duty model can deliver. There are two versions available: the Silverado 2500HD and the even more capable Silverado 3500HD. Three trim levels -- Work Truck, LT and LTZ -- are also offered. In this overview, we focus on the Work Truck, which is aimed at commercial shoppers with serious truck needs.
Expect pricing for a Silverado 2500HD Work Truck to start around $32,300 with shipping. The 3500HD model starts around $33,800, largely due to its increased payload capacity. There are two bed lengths (regular and extended), two cab styles (regular and 4-door crew cab) and two drivetrains (2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive). There's also a Dually option on 3500HD models that increases the payload capacity by including dual rear wheels on each side.
Drivers also get to choose between two engines. Standard on both the 2500HD and 3500HD models is a 360-horsepower 6.0-liter V8. But if you need more grunt, you'll want the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8. Yes, its power is only 397 horses, but torque stands at a monstrous 765 lb-ft. That's perfect for those looking to tow or haul heavy loads.
But while the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD Work Truck can tow and haul just about anything, you won't find many niceties inside. The trucks have crank windows, vinyl upholstery and an AM/FM stereo, but no CD player. Many upgrades are available on the truck's options list, but such extras will increase the pickup's price.
Still, that makes the Silverado HD Work Truck perfect for drivers who need a heavy-duty pickup that can tackle just about any job. For amenities, Chevrolet also offers the LT and LTZ models, but the Work Truck remains king of any dirty job site or rural farm.
