How do you make one of the best trucks on the road even better? That was the challenge for the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, and the solution was clear: Go big or go home. The chiseled new Silverado has some serious big-rig presence, and it's also more capable and luxurious than ever. Here are five reasons why the Silverado is right up there with Ford and RAM for best-in-class distinction.

More Power

No one ever accused the previous Silverado of being underpowered, but rival trucks have raised the bar, so now it's Chevy's turn to respond. Although the Silverado's engines have the same displacement as before, they're fresh designs with more grunt than ever. The base 4.3-liter V6 makes a solid 285 horsepower, while the 5.3-liter V8 has 355 horses and the 6.2 gives you a formidable 420 hp. Whatever your needs may be, the Silverado has an engine that fits the bill.

Solid Fuel Economy

Despite its newfound power reserves, the Silverado's more fuel efficient, too. The V6 is the winner at 24 miles per gallon on the highway, but the 5.3-liter V8's right behind at 23 mpg. Even the 6.2 isn't bad at 20 mpg hwy. That's pretty frugal for a big, tough truck.

Luxurious Ride

In terms of ride quality, the RAM 1500 has been the luxury truck in this segment for years, but the Silverado gives it a run for its money. The Chevy cruises quietly at any speed, which is pretty impressive for a beast like this. We're impressed by the supple suspension, too; it's a definite upgrade from the bouncy setup that underpinned the previous Silverado. Looking for a truck that can serve as a family vehicle or even date-night transportation? The 2014 Silverado has the goods.

Improved Interior

If there's one area where the old Silverado really needed improvement, it was inside, where the design and materials seemed rather bare-bones compared to the competition. There was a premium layout in high-end models, but it still left something to be desired. These days, trucks are expected to be as nice as cars, and the new Silverado nails it with classier materials, an available high-tech touchscreen interface and an overall look that's almost upscale. The RAM 1500 used to be the leader here, but the Silverado's back in the conversation.

Macho Styling

Do trucks get any bigger or bolder than this? We're sure they will, but for now, the Silverado's arguably the styling champ. The grille looks like a swap from an 18-wheeler, and the stance is just mean, especially with big wheels and tires. Avoid this truck if you don't like to make a strong first impression.

AutoTrader Says

You can't go wrong with any full-size truck these days, but it's always big news when a legend gets redesigned. If you're after the best truck on the market, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado makes a country-strong case.
