• This Maybach belonged to NFL star Plaxico Burress
  • Burress stored the car while in jail
  • He recently traded it for a new Ferrari

Although Mercedes-Benz's superluxury Maybach brand has officially called it quits, the high-end automaker's six-figure product lineup certainly found a host of celebrity buyers while it remained in business. One such Maybach owner was NFL star Plaxico Burress, whose former 2007 Maybach 57S is currently listed for sale on AutoTrader.com.

It's offered by Ferrari of Long Island in Plainview, New York, and the best part about Burress's Maybach is that it isn't just a "regular" version of the ultra-luxury car. Instead, its high-performance S designation ensures that the gargantuan sedan has an equally enormous powerplant under the hood: a 6.0-liter twin turbocharged V12 that produces 620 horsepower and an almost unbelievable 738 lb-ft of torque. That's an increase of nearly 80 hp and lb-ft over the standard model, which itself sported a slightly smaller twin-turbocharged V12.

But while all that power would make driving irresistible to many car enthusiasts, Burress put less than 38,000 miles on the sedan in his five years of ownership -- about 7,600 miles per year. And while one might speculate that the football star kept the sedan parked to preserve its value or because he wasn't pleased about fuel economy of just 10 miles per gallon in city driving, the reality is a lot more scandalous.

"When he went to jail, we stored the car for a long time," explained a salesperson at Ferrari of Long Island. "We kept the car in our facility when until he got out."

Indeed, as NFL fans are keenly aware, Burress was arrested after accidentally firing a gun in a New York City nightclub. When the wide receiver was released from the hospital after treatment of injuries stemming from the incident, the ensuing investigation discovered he wasn't registered to carry the gun. Burress then sat out the 2009 and 2010 NFL seasons in jail. On his release, the Maybach was removed from storage and driven again, with the former Pittsburgh Steelers' first-round draft pick trading it in only recently for a new Ferrari.

Despite Burress's legal troubles, potential buyers shouldn't be dissuaded from purchasing his former car, which recently returned from an extensive service visit at a local Mercedes dealership. For potential buyers who may be interested in a super sedan with a colorful history, the vehicle is available at Ferrari of Long Island for $169,900 -- far less than its original retail price of nearly $350,000 just five years ago.

What it means to you: Check out this 2007 Maybach if you're looking for a luxury car with an exciting history.
