For sale right now on AutoTrader is a 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL 550 that once belonged to a professional hockey player.
According to the dealer selling the truck, the GL was purchased for Andrei Zyuzin. Zyuzin has played for six different NHL hockey teams including the San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks. In 2008, Zyuzin left the NHL to play in the newly formed Kontinental Hockey League in his home country of Russia.
While playing for the Sharks, Zyuzin could be spotted driving around town in his customized GL SUV.
According to Kevin Champ, the general manager at Bayshore Automotive, Zyuzin also owned a pretty high end Bentley. The Bentley had a special interior that was done by the UK coach builder HJ Mulliner & Co. The hockey star took such a liking to the top-of-the-line interior that he had a local shop replicate it in the Mercedes.
Diamond stitched leather and a suede headliner set the custom GL apart from the rest of the Mercedes SUVs.
From the factory, the GL550 was already equipped with a pretty impressive stereo system supplied by Harmann Kardon, but Zyuzin wasn't satisfied. - A custom JL Audio subwoofer system has been installed in the back and a TV system was put in for passengers in the back.
Customization wasn't limited to the just inside, Zyuzin chose to have the car fitted with aftermarket body pieces from the German tuning masters at Brabus. The taillights have been tinted to match the GL's black paint and the truck now rolls on a set of AMG alloy wheels.
In all, Champ said the hockey star has spent somewhere around $15,000 upgrading the Mercedes to his specifications.
The dealer is asking $62,980 for the GL550, which compares really well with the estimated KBB values for similar trucks. It's hard to estimate added value from aftermarket work or celebrity ownership, but these things rarely add significant value to the resale value of the truck.
