It looks like Volvo is getting ready to join the plug-in hybrid game. The Swedish automaker recently announced plans to debut a plug-in version of its V60, an upcoming wagon variant of the company’s sporty new S60 sedan. Volvo says the hybrid will be shown at next month’s Geneva auto show and will feature two major developments: all-wheel drive, and a diesel engine.
Featuring 215 horsepower and a muscular 324 pound-feet of torque, the V60 Plug-In Hybrid’s diesel engine – a first for a plug-in hybrid – will be responsible for turning the front wheels, while a 70-horsepower electric motor turns the rear wheels. Working together, the two engines will also make the V60 Plug-In Hybrid the world’s first all-wheel drive plug-in – if it sees production.
At the moment, that’s a big “if,” as Volvo has not officially announced future plans for the plug-in V60. Still, Volvo promises that the model shown at Geneva will be “virtually production-ready,” pledging that the wagon will achieve fuel economy topping 100mpg thanks to its ability to go more than 30 miles on pure electricity.
But the V60 Plug-In Hybrid isn’t all green. With its S60 sedan stablemate consistently getting positive reviews for its sporty demeanor and excellent handling, Volvo could hardly let the plug-in V60 shed the sedan’s athleticism. Fortunately, the V60 Plug-In Hybrid will stay sporty, with Volvo Chief Executive Stefan Jacoby calling the wagon “the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a superbly carbon dioxide-lean car packed with driving pleasure.”
“In order to get true car enthusiasts to think green,” Jacoby continued, “you have to offer them the opportunity to drive with low carbon dioxide emissions without taking away the adrenaline rush that promotes driving pleasure. The V60 Plug-In Hybrid has all the properties of a genuine sports wagon.”
