Merv Griffin Lincoln Town Car

Buying a celebrity-owned car often equates to a very expensive purchase. That's because celebrities tend to like exotic cars that require expensive maintenance. But that isn't always the case.

Merv Griffin's 1995 Lincoln Town Car is for sale right now on

Griffin started as a singer at 19, and then worked as an actor. He became a household name in the 1960s thanks to his popular talk show. Later, Griffin became well known for the hugely successful game shows he helped create, such as Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

Griffin invested heavily in real estate during his later years, and was likely worth more than a billion dollars when he passed away in 2007.

Griffin's Lincoln Town Car is largely unchanged since he purchased it new in 1995. An old car phone still sits in the back seat, an expensive upgrade in the mid '90s.

Current owner Dave Grohosky said he often gets stopped by people who want to talk about the Lincoln. "It's an attractive car for a '95" Grohosky said. That's impressive considering it is now 16 years old with around 102,000 miles on it.

Grohosky is asking $4,700 for the Town Car, which is right on target for the KBB value for similar cars.

Lincoln made some changes to update the Town Car for the 1995 model year, but even then the boxy styling of the car was looking pretty dated. In spite of that, it has always been popular among luxury car buyers, and has long been the vehicle of choice for stretch limousines.

Lincoln's Town Car stands as one of the few remaining examples of the traditional American luxury car. While most luxury cars took on sporty pretensions, the Lincoln's soft suspension always delivered on its promise of having the cushiest ride in the business.

According to Grohosky, Griffin preferred the Lincoln over the higher-rated import luxury cars of its time.

To say that the Town Car is the last of a dying breed is putting it lightly. Lincoln is discontinuing the car this year and insists that future bachelorette parties and red carpet events will instead feature a stretched version of its MKT crossover SUV.
