Ford Crown Victoria is the last traditional American full-size car on the market.

 

If you yearned for an American-made full-size V8-powered six-passenger sedan with rear wheel drive thirty years ago you were in the majority and there were numerous choices. Nowadays what was once called a standard car has become a distinct rarity with only one car on the market, albeit in three different guises. The Ford Crown Victoria (and its almost identical sibling the Mercury Grand Marquis along with the luxury Lincoln Town Car) is the last remaining iteration of this type of car.

With the disappearance of the Chevrolet Caprice in 1996 the Crown Victoria is left with no rivals. It has given Ford an almost monopoly of supplying police forces around the country as the police favor big cars. About half of the Crown Victorias made each year are sold to police forces. These cars are beefed up versions and some of them end up as pre-owned cars although with high mileage and lots of wear and tear.

If you’re still a fan of the traditional American full-size car you’re pretty much stuck with a Ford Crown Victoria. Despite the lack of competition, Ford has not ignored the car and the newer versions are much improved over earlier models. They offer better handling, improved comfort and consume less fuel. In reality a Crown Victoria is a good alternative to a minivan or a sport utility, for carrying up to six passengers.

If it’s good enough for the police it must be good enough for you and me. Although Ford does not use this as a slogan it might just as well with half the Crown Victorias made each year going to police forces and a good percentage of the remainder going to taxi fleets. Traditionalist will say that a good body-on-frame rear drive car powered by a V8 engine is still the most durable design. Of course that is essentially the design philosophy of most sport utility vehicles so perhaps the majority of people are still enamored with this layout.

The 1996 Crown Victoria I test drove was in good condition and had obviously not been used as a police car or taxicab. The V8 engine provided plenty of straight-line performance although the shifting was not as smooth as I’d like. On corners, though, the body leaned somewhat.

The interior of this base model was clean with no obvious signs of wear. Although the car is not expensive the fit and finish was better than some American cars in this price range. However, it’s not up to the level of many Japanese cars of similar price. The dashboard is a simple affair that runs across the width of the car in a straight line. It has a small strip of fake wood to add some character. The three large round analog gauges are easy to read and most switches fall to hand nicely.

Headroom is generous all round but I was a little disappointed with the rear seat legroom. It’s better than in smaller cars but not as generous as one would expect considering the vehicle’s overall size. Trunk capacity is huge but with a deep floor it can be quite an effort lifting heavy suitcases or boxes in and out.

This particular car had cloth seats and few options. However, even the base model includes power windows, air conditioning and other features one would expect in more expensive cars. It would make an ideal family car for someone who doesn’t want the poor ride of a sport utility vehicle. It makes a lot of sense for those people who have to ferry around more than one passenger most of the time. Essentially you get a lot of motor car for a reasonable price. Perhaps that’s why the police and cab driver s love the Crown Victoria so much!

3. History of Crown Victoria

The Crown Victoria name was first used in 1980 on the then current LTD model that was introduced in 1979. The Crown Victoria has continued to be built on the same frame ever since although the sheet metal has changed several times over the years.

 

4. Review of Current Crown Victoria

In some ways the newest version of the Crown Victoria, introduced in 1998 looks less stylish than the model on the market between 1992 and 1997. Gone is the streamlined nose with a small grille. In its place the 1998 Crown Victoria gets a more substantial nose with a largish grille. It gives the car a more formal appearance, perhaps befitting its stature.

The most significant change is under the rear where Ford engineers have completely redesigned the rear suspension to improve the ride and handling while keeping the supple ride. The rear body has been redesigned with different tail light cluster and more significantly a much lower deck lid making access to the large trunk much easier.

The car does not tend to float or wallow over bumps in the road as much as before which makes it much safer to drive. Considering the size of the car the steering is not too bad. The car continues to offer good performance thanks to the V8 engine, however I found the automatic transmission still shifting at the wrong moment all too often. Despite the improvements it is still by no means a sports sedan.

The car I drove had optional digital instrumentation, which I do not object to as much as many do. The speedometer is obviously much easier to read and other gauges also tell the story quickly. The tachometer is the one instrument that does not lend itself to a digital read out but I suspect most Crown Victoria buyers don’t worry about the lack of this information.

My son liked the Crown Victoria as he said he felt like an undercover cop when riding in it. I’m not sure whether that’s a complement or an insult.

If the vehicle is operated in cold weather in areas that have large amounts of salt used for snow and ice control, a puddle of saltwater can accumulate on the rubber floor mats, repeatedly wetting the connector. This will result in corrosion of the connector, causing a current to flow between the terminals without tripping the circuit breaker.

If this occurs, current flow can heat the connector and release fumes into the passenger compartment, and can result in a vehicle fire.

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
