A carry-over from 2006, the RX8 is a four-door four-passenger sports car that features rear-hinged back doors for easy access to the rear seats. The RX8 is offered in three trim levels - the Sport, the Touring and the GT, with all models featuring a 1.3-liter rotary engine that produces 232 horsepower linked to a six-speed manual transmission.
Most sports car's back seats are suitable for children or storage and not much else. Mazda's 2007 RX-8 breaks the sports car mold by offering real back seat capacity for two adults. Access to the rear seats is made easy by 'free style' rear opening doors. Engine performance is brought by a naturally-aspirated 1.3L rotary engine making 232 horsepower at 8500 rpm (212 horsepower at 7500 rpm with the automatic transmission) and 159 lb-ft of torque at 5500 rpm. More impressive is the nimble and direct handling, due in part to its perfect 50/50 front/rear weight balance. Pricing begins at $26,435 for the Sport model (manual or auto), $29,535 for the manual Touring model or $30,335 for the Touring model with automatic transmission. Pricing for the Grand Touring model starts at $31,070 for the manual and $31,770 for the automatic.
Changes are minor for the Mazda RX-8's fifth year of production; most notable is a six-disc in-dash CD changer that is now standard on the Touring and Grand Touring trim levels. The 'Shinka' special edition trim level has been discontinued for 2007.
Mazda's RX-8 stands proudly as the only production automobile with a rotary engine. The RX-8's 'RENESIS' rotary engine has fewer moving parts than a conventional engine and with no reciprocating parts can spin effortlessly to 9000 rpm (with manual transmission). The RX-8 is rear wheel drive and can be had with either a six-speed short-throw manual transmission or a six-speed automatic that can be operated manually via steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
