Mercedes-Benz is all about comfort, luxury, and refinement, and the 2007 CLS-Class does all of these exceedingly well. The CLS-Class isn't a large car and the word 'sedan' doesn't seem to fit the smallish car with four doors, so Mercedes-Benz calls it a four-door coupe. A new computer-controlled seven-speed automatic transmission helps the CLS550 achieve 22 mpg on the highway, which is impressive for a big V8. The upper-level CLS63 will please performance enthusiasts with its very powerful 6.3L V8 engine that generates 507 horsepower. The brakes, suspension, wheels, and even steering wheel are designed by AMG. The result is a very comfortable performance coupe.

What's new for 2007?

The base Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class trim got a larger engine for 2007 in the form of a 5.5L V8 that produces 382 horsepower. The up-level trim is now called the CLS63, and features an AMG-built 6.3L V8 that puts out 507 horsepower. The transmission for both gained two ratios to become a seven-speed automatic. Prices rose $2,000 for the base trim, and $5,600 on the AMG version.

Model Review

Nobody executes the performance/luxury combination like Mercedes-Benz, and the 2007 CLS-Class represents Mercedes-Benz' take on those two attributes in a mid-size sedan. The interior dimensions are on the small size (it's only two cubic feet bigger inside than an Accord coupe), so Mercedes-Benz has elected to call it a 'four-door coupe.'
