The 2007 Nissan Altima, refreshed for the new year, is a four-door five-passenger family sedan. Their trim levels are diverse, from sporty to fuel-efficient. The base and the S model have a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine that produces 175 horsepower, with the SE and the SL fitted with a 3.5 liter V6 that ups the horsepower to 250. The sportiest version is the SE-R, with a 3.5 liter V6 that puts out 260 horsepower, and comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission with the optional five-speed automatic. The new Altima hybrid pairs a 2.5L inline-four with an electric motor and a CVT transmission to earn 42 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.
With the Altima's MSRP starting at $17,950 and the top-end 3.5 SL at $28,400 before options, this car is priced comparably to the class-leading Honda Accord and Toyota Camry but with more standard horsepower. More striking, the hybrid version is $2,000 less than the Toyota Camry hybrid and more than $6,000 less than the Accord Hybrid.
Nissan's best seller, the Altima, received a major redesign in 2007, it's first since 2002. The four-door sedan now rests on the all-new 'D' platform, the engine has been lowered by 30 mm, the front suspension has been redesigned, all of which has improved the already credible ride. The wheelbase is nearly an inch shorter, but due to interior changes that included moving the cowl and rear glass, the size of the interior and trunk remain largely unchanged.
The completely redesigned 2007 Altima not only improves handling with its new platform, but it also takes steps toward affordable luxury. Plenty of airbags, Intelligent Key push-button start, and a/c are standard, while Bluetooth capability, nav system, HomeLink, a rearview monitor, and dual-zone automatic temperature control are some of the available options.
