New for 2007, the FJ Cruiser is a mid-size SUV that offers retro styling that is reminiscent of the original Land Cruiser built in the 1950's. It is uniquely styled with swing-out rear-hinged rear-doors for easy entry-and-exit to the back seat. The five-passenger FJ Cruiser is only offered with one engine, the 4.0Liter V6 that produces 239HP with either two or four-wheel-drive, or the full-time four-wheel-drive system with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
With a base price in the low $20,000 range, the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser is an exceptional value for the weekend warriors for whom it was designed. The styling harkens back to the Toyota FJ40 and is not part of the looks-like-everything-else school of SUV design. It is a great choice for those looking for a compact SUV that is more off-road than on-road oriented, and Consumer Reports has given it the best reliability rating possible for its first year.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is all new for 2007, and it is based on the 4Runner chassis. Its styling echoes the Toyota FJ40 that was sold in the U.S. from 1960 to 1984. The new FJ uses a 239-horsepower 4.0L V6 engine, which makes it a hoot to drive. A five-speed automatic transmission can be ordered on any FJ Cruiser, while a six-speed manual is reserved for four-wheel-drive variants.
The 2007 FJ Cruiser joins a very extensive lineup of Toyota SUVs. With the RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser (let alone the various Lexus iterations), what niche does the FJ fit into that isn't already covered by Toyota's existing SUVs? The fun, modern-yet-retro, go-anywhere-off-road niche.
