A carry-over from 2007, the SRX is a four-door five-passenger cross-over SUV that offers seating for up-to-seven passengers. It features a 3.6-liter VVT V6 engine with SFI that produces 255 horsepower and 254 ft-lb of torque linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. There is also a 4.6-liter Northstar V8 with VVT and SFI that cranks out 320 horsepower and 315 ft-lb of torque (with a six-speed automatic transmission). Both models are offered in either two or four-wheel-drive configuration.

With a base MSRP of $37,045, the 2008 Cadillac SRX brings a lot to the table. For starters, the GM 3.6L 'high feature' V6 is smooth and capable, while never becoming noisy or obtrusive. Also standard is StabiliTrak, which can reduce engine or wheel speed as conditions dictate. Goodyear tires ride on handsome 17-inch painted cast aluminum wheels, which are bolted to very capable four wheel anti-lock disc brakes. Other standard amenities include power front bucket seats, a tilting leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, a complimentary year of OnStar service, and parking assist. All these standard features on top of an SUV that drives on par with its German and Japanese rivals translate to an outstanding value that should not be ignored.

What's new for 2008?

The Cadillac SRX has minimal changes for 2008, with adaptive remote start is now standard on the base V6 and V8. In addition, for the V6 a tire pressure monitor and painted cast aluminum wheels are standard, and the optional Premium Seating Package now includes a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel. Standard on the V8 for 2008 is a heated steering wheel. Black Cherry joins the color chart.

Cadillac's 2008 SRX is available in two basic flavors: V8 and V6. Both engines offer variable valve timing and can be mated to an optional all-wheel-drive system. Even the base V6, which uses GM's excellent 255-horsepower 'high feature' 3.6L engine can be driven quickly, which is more rewarding than you would expect. Cadillac has really spent some time sorting out the suspension tuning of both SRX models, and it shows. Upgrade to the Northstar 4.6L V8, and horsepower increases to 320.

This crisply styled mid-size crossover sport-utility vehicle is built off the same platform as the rear-drive CTS and STS sports sedans.

Last year, the SRX got an updated interior, a new Sport Package with 20-inch wheels, and a six-speed automatic transmission on models equipped with the optional 4.6-liter, 320-horsepower Northstar V-8 engine. A 3.6-liter, 260-horsepower V-6 is the standard engine in SRX - teamed with a five-speed automatic. The SRX is available in either rear- or all-wheel drive.

The SRX's interior can hold as many as seven passengers with the optional power-folding third-row seat. Six airbags and GM's StabiliTrak stability control system are standard; Magnetic Ride Control is optional.

The Sport Package includes front and rear sport fascias, new body-colored grille with V-Series-style mesh backing, 4-inch dual polished exhaust tips, the six-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift control and optional 20-inch Sport wheels with high-performance tires.

A navigation system is standard on the V-8 version and is optional with the V-6. OnStar-equipped models also get turn-by-turn navigation assistance.

Adaptive Remote Start is a new option for 2008; it permits the driver to start the engine, adjust the heat and air to a preset temperature, and defrost the windows.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
