Like its much larger stablemate, the F-150, the 2008 Ford Ranger pickup spans a broad price and equipment range and can be equipped to suit a wide range of uses. There are three different cab configurations (regular cab, and two- or four-door SuperCab), two different bed lengths (six- or seven-foot), three engines with rear- or four-wheel drive, and a bewildering array of four different trims, many of which are available in multiple combinations.

While Toyota , Chevrolet and Nissan have fielded newer, larger compact and mid-size trucks in recent years, Ford has stayed true to the Ranger in the same form, essentially, it's taken since 1998.

For 2007, the evergreen Ford Ranger compact pickup received some cosmetic tweaks, a standard tire pressure monitoring system, and an iPod jack. Now, for 2008, the Ranger lineup returns with four trim levels, two body styles, three engines, two transmissions, and even more optional equipment.

The Ranger offers a full range of model choices, in rear- or four-wheel drive. Two-door Regular Cab and in two- and four-door SuperCab configurations are offered. All versions get a redesigned front bumper valance said to improve fuel economy.

Trim levels include the XL, XLT, Sport and an FX4 Off-Road model, which gets standard Rancho shocks, a Class III trailer package, skid plates and sport bucket seats, and an available Torsen limited-slip differential.

The Ranger is available with a base 143-horsepower 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, or a choice of two V-6s, including a 148-horsepower 3.0-liter version and a 4.0-liter model that generates 207 horses. Each can be fitted to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed-automatic transmission. Properly equipped, a Ranger can tow up to 6000 pounds.

Anti-lock brakes and dual airbags are standard on all versions. Options include an off-road package with skid plates, aluminum wheels, and Bilstein shocks, as well as a 510-watt audio system and Sirius satellite radio.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
