2008 HUMMER H3 Sport Utility

Summary

Provided by NADAguides.com

The 2008 Hummer H3 is a smaller version of its brother (the Hummer H2) and features a smaller price tag and arguably more convenient driving and parking capabilities too. This four door five passenger SUV comes equipped with all-time 4WD, as well as a 242 horsepower 3.7-liter gas 5, with a 5-speed overdrive-enabled automatic transmission. The 300 hp 5.3L V8 equipped Alpha trim is new for the model year. In addition to well-rounded safety features that include front and side-head airbags, ABS brakes, traction control and parking assist, the H3 also boasts a nice list of standard equipment, including satellite radio.

Benefits of Driving a 2008 HUMMER H3 Sport Utility

The 2008 Hummer H3 may be smaller than the H2, but it is no less imposing wherever it shows its massive chrome grille. Physically, it is only five inches shorter, three inches less long, and 1,700 pounds lighter. The H3 is priced at $25,555 less than the H2, making it a real value in Hummer-per-dollar.

What's new for 2008?

Available for the 2008 Hummer H3 is the more powerful 5.3L V8 powertrain with 300 horsepower. This engine is exclusive to Alpha Edition, which also comes with a Monsoon audio system, oversized floor mats, oversized cargo mat, and eight-way power seats. With the Alpha Edition maximum towing is increased to 6,000 pounds.

Model Strengths

  • Excellent off-road performance
  • Hummer appeal for less money.

Model Review

GM introduced the Hummer H3 in 2006 as an entry-level Hummer for the masses. It features styling that is strikingly similar to its older brother, the H2. If it weren't for the H3's broader fender flares the casual spotter might have a tough time telling them apart.

2008 Hummer H3X

Source: Carlist.com

DETROIT - Black on black in black. It's been a while since we've really been impressed with that color combination. But it really looked good on our 2008 Hummer H3X SUV.

Our test vehicle answered the main complaint from auto scribes about the Baby Hummer - its lack of power. Although the H3 is smaller than a full-size H2, it still weighed about 5,000 lbs. and the 3.7-liter inline-five cylinder engine at 242 horsepower and the same amount of torque wasn't getting the job done.

Although that engine is still standard, our H3X was equipped with a 5.2-liter V8 that made 300 horsepower and 320 pounds-feet of torque. Mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox, this drive train provided more than adequate power to conduct everyday driving.

Acceleration was sufficient to get away from red lights without folks getting mad or zooming by us. We got on expressways with relative ease. Once on we didn't feel defenseless. Our test vehicle got from 60 mph to 80 mph nicely. But it was a little sluggish getting up to higher speeds. That was okay because the H3X is a truck based SUV and as such it's not supposed to go zooming down the expressway like a sedan.

Beyond the ebony hue of our test vehicle, the package on our H3X included chrome tube steps, body colored grille, spare tire cover, 18-inch wheels and center cap and embroidered head rests.

But what really impressed us was the minimalist interior design. For a minute, we didn't think there was a radio because the center stack was devoid of clutter. There was a touch screen navigation system and the controls for it as well as the audio system were neatly stacked to the left of the screen.

Press a button and the appropriate controls appeared on the touch screen. Those buttons could have been bigger but that was our only quibble. There was one small knob for power and audio and one small knob to tune the radio station and that was it.

Our test vehicle had a rearview camera. However, in an interesting twist, the screen slid out from the side of the rearview mirror when we put the Hummer H3X into reverse. In effect, the set up kept the rear view mirror within our sight range.

For what it was, we were quite pleased with the H3X. Our test vehicle had the off road package that featured a rugged suspension, fully locking rear differential and 33-inch off road tires. What's more, our H3X could tow 6,000 lbs, fjord through two-feet of water at 5 mph and it had 55.7 cubic ft of cargo space with the second row seat folded.

As with most rugged off road vehicles, the H3X had four wheel-drive with a low gear for sloshing through the woods.

We felt like we were sitting in a pill box. Hummers have tall body panels and short windows. But the combination provided us with a cozy impenetrable feeling that might be appreciated in some places. The lift gate was one piece and it swung open rather than lifted up. It was easy for us to use and we liked it better than a traditional lift gate.

Our test vehicle also had OnStar with a hands free phone, on board diagnostics, turn by turn navigation and emergency services. It was based priced at $38,375 but it was equipped with almost $6,000 worth of options.

The creature comforts included a power sunroof, trailer hitch and wiring, premium audio system, satellite radio and leather seats. The total tab came to $44,890. Although our Hummer H3X had a really slick, sleek look and handled these streets really well, it was a rugged SUV that deserves to wear the Hummer badge.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

Original Warranty  help
Original Warranty
An original warranty is the warranty associated with a vehicle when it is brand new. In addition to the original warranty, select items, like tires, are typically covered by respective manufacturers. Also, an act of Federal law sometimes provides protection for certain components, like emissions equipment.
The original warranty is often broken down into multiple sections, including:
Basic Warranty:
Typically covers everything except for parts that wear out through normal use of the vehicle. Examples of non-covered items are brake pads, wiper blades and filters.
Drivetrain Warranty:
This warranty covers items the basic warranty does not protect. Wear and tear items such as hoses will not be covered, but key items like the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft often will be.
Roadside Assistance:
The level of service differs greatly with this warranty, but many manufacturers offer a toll-free number that helps provide assistance in case you run out of gas, get a flat tire or lock your keys in the car.
Corrosion Warranty:
This warranty focuses on protecting you from holes caused by rust or corrosion in your vehicle's sheet metal.
Please check the owner's manual, visit a local dealership or look at the manufacturer's website to learn more about the specifics of the warranties that apply to a vehicle.
