What's new for 2008?

The Honda Accord line, which includes one of the best-selling midsize sedans in the U.S. as well as a coupe body style, has been completely redesigned for 2008. It's slightly larger all around, yielding a more spacious interior. Honda has also upgraded the Accord's standard safety features. As before, the Accord offers a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines.

Model Review

Honda's Accord gets a completely new, more sophisticated and detail-oriented look for 2008, along with a complete mechanical redesign. It's slightly larger overall, including almost three inches more length than the 2007 model, but more notably it's slightly wider, making the interior 1.5 inches wider as well. This wider stance allows the front seats to be set farther apart with a more expansive center console.

Honda has worked to distinguish the Accord Coupe from the sedan. A great looking design with an aggressive wedge shape and flat rear glass, the Accord Coupe is powered by a sweet 3.5-liter V6 that puts out 268 horsepower. Combined with the 6-speed manual in our test car, this should be one sporty coupe, but it doesn't quite come together. The clutch is very light but hard to engage smoothly, the steering is also light but numb with no feedback to the driver, and with all that V6 power even Honda can't eliminate the torque steer. The interior is beautifully done with leather-trimmed seats, perfect ergonomics, Honda's navigation system and Bluetooth hands-free phone integration. This new Accord does everything well. Honda has a reputation for delivering automobiles with bulletproof reliability, sensible styling and efficient engines at a great value, and this Accord does not disappoint. The leather seats are supportive and the driver has great access to all controls. The new navigation system, using a control knob similar to the BMW iDrive, requires a small learning curve to use efficiently. The back seat offers decent legroom, but limited headroom due to the slanted roofline. On the road the Accord puts down strong power from the V6 using a smooth 6-speed manual, but develops slight torque steer and body roll when pushed aggressively. While there are other cars that might excite a driver more, overall the Accord is a great automobile for someone who wants reliability mixed with performance. - Joe Chulick

What a difference colors make. The interior and plastic dashboard in the Honda Accord Coupe look much better in black than they do in the lighter colors available. The coupe is much prettier than the sedan on the outside, and has an absolutely brilliant, silky smooth V6 engine. That V6 engine is quiet and unobtrusive around town but has an invigorating growl when pushed to higher revs. To match that smooth engine, Honda engineers have made the feel of all the major controls too light. For anyone who enjoys driving, the over-light steering, brick-like clutch and totally effortless shifter (which manages to be too far away from the steering wheel) are a huge disappointment. Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
