What's new for 2008?

Model Review

All 2008 Honda Pilots are available with either front-wheel drive or a VTM-4 four-wheel drive system that provides front-wheel drive on dry pavement but sends power to the rear wheels in low-traction situations. It also includes a lock mode to consistently send power to the rear wheels for low-speed, low-traction situations such as snow or sand. Power for all Pilots is provided by a 3.5L, all-aluminum V6 making 244 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic.

Honda says the 2008 Pilot crossover will get two new trim levels added to its existing lineup.

Likely in its last model year before a redesign, the Pilot will add a Value Package and Special Edition trim levels, priced from $27,595 and $31,595 respectively. Destination charges on both are $595.

The Value Package, Honda says, replaces the LX edition from the 2007 model year. It adds to the LX's trim rear privacy glass, alloy wheels, XM satellite radio, a six-CD changer and body-colored side mirrors, door handles, and rear spoiler.

Adding on to the existing EX model is the Special Edition package, which adds on a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, XM, a power moonroof, ambient console lighting, and a 115-volt power outlet.

Honda's eight-passenger crossover received a major update in 2006. Its standard engine is a 244-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine that includes an electronic throttle control system. The Pilot's available VTM-4 (Variable Torque Management-4WD) all-wheel-drive system sends power to the rear wheels automatically when needed; when conditions become seriously slippery, the driver can engage and lock 50 percent of power to the rear wheels. Three-row side curtain airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, stability control and traction control are standard equipment.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
