Compared to last year, the 2008 Jeep Compass remains virtually unchanged. It features a 172 horsepower 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with a 5-speed manual transmission (or a Continuously Variable Transaxle automatic as an option). The Compass is offered in two trim levels � the Sport and the Limited � in either two or four wheel drive. In addition to a nice list of standard equipment that includes air conditioning, cruise control and heated seats, the Compass also features plenty of safety features, including front/side-body/side-head airbags, ABS brakes and traction control.

The Compass also has better fuel-efficiency than most SUVs its size, at an EPA-rated 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and also stands out for its standard safety features, including side curtain air bags and electronic stability control. Price is perhaps the strongest selling point, though; at a base price that's equal to that of many small economy cars, the Compass is an impressive alternative.

What's new for 2008?

In its second model year, the Jeep Compass gets a wide range of changes to its lists of standard and available equipment lists for 2008. Most notably, air conditioning is now standard across the model line, and a navigation system is newly available on the top Limited model. A newly available Special Equipment Group 'E' package brings stain-resistant fabric, carpeted floor mats, and cruise control, and a Safety and Convenience Group brings a garage door opener, an auto-dimming mirror, an information center, and an alarm system. Also, the Security and Convenience Group now includes the UConnect hands-free communication system, the Trailer Tow Prep Group now adds a full-size spare tire, and the Premium Sound Group adds Sirius satellite radio.

Jeep's entry-level, compact Compass is a car-based crossover that shares its platform and drivetrains with the Dodge Caliber and its sibling, the Jeep Patriot.

Unlike traditional Jeeps - which have historically been serious off-roaders with four-wheel drive and low-range gearing, the Compass is a front-wheel-drive vehicle with lighter-duty all-wheel drive as an option. Though the optional "Freedom Drive" system can route as much as 60 percent of engine power to the rear wheels, the absence of Low range gearing means the Compass is primarily an on-road vehicle and should be compared with similar car-based crossovers.

The standard Compass engine is a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder rated at 172 horsepower, available with either a five-speed manual or a CVT. The '08 Compass comes in Sport and Limited styles, with 17-inch wheels, stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes, and curtain airbags as standard equipment on both versions.

Major options include 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, a moonroof, and an upgrade audio system with six-disc CD changer, Sirius satellite radio, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Three new colors are offered for 2008. In addition, air conditioning is now standard on all models, as are tire pressure monitors. There's more chrome trim inside, and a navigation system is now available on Limited models. The Compass' continuously variable transmission has been updated with better responsiveness and new AutoStick control.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
