What's new for 2008?

For 2008, the Kia Sorento adds a new engine to the lineup--a 242-horsepower 3.3L V6. It will power the base and LX models, while the 262-horsepower 3.8L V6 that powered the entire line last year only comes in EX models. Outside, the 2008 Sorento differs slightly, as the grille, headlights, taillights, and front and rear fascias have been revised. Pricing on the base model climbed $1,000, while across the rest of the range, the increase was far more modest.

With its new 3.3L V6, which has 242-horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque, the 2008 Kia Sorento offers an attractive engine alternative to the excellent 3.8L V6 that puts out 262-horsepower and 260 lb-ft. The 3.3L powers the base model as well as the LX, while the EX is powered by the 3.8. Both engines come with five-speed Sportomatic gearboxes.

Kia's mid-size Sorento SUV was updated for 2007 with a new exterior styling theme and revised interior trim. For 2008, there's bigger news under the hood of the mid-size SUV. A new 3.3-liter V-6 is the new engine in Sorento LXs; it makes 242 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque, and comes with a five-speed automatic. So equipped the Sorento is capable of towing 3500 pounds.

Last year's 3.8-liter V-6 remains the standard engine on the EX models. It's also teamed to a five-speed automatic and it gives the Sorento 5000-pound towing capacity.

Both rear- and four-wheel-drive Sorentos are offered. There are two different four-wheel-drive systems: a part-time system with a low range, and a Torque-On-Demand system that operates all the time, and also offers a low range. The latter is available only on some EX models.

All Sorentos come standard with dual front and curtain airbags; four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, stability and traction control; tire pressure monitors; and active headrests.

Standard features include air conditioning; power windows/door locks/heated mirrors; cruise control; a 10-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system; an eight-way adjustable driver's seat; 60/40 split flip-and-fold rear seats; roof rails; and a keyless entry system.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH.
