Model Review

The Land Rover LR3 is powered by a 4.4L V8 making 300 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque for 2008. The modern aluminum engine has chain-driven overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Power is delivered through a six-speed automatic transmission, which has a Sport mode for maximum acceleration and CommandShift mode for manual shift control. The permanent four-wheel-drive system uses an infinitely variable locking center differential to vary the torque distribution front-to-back. There's also a low range for steep or challenging off-road situations. A locking rear differential is optional.

Land Rover's mid-price, mid-size luxury sport-utility vehicle borrows key styling cues from its larger showroom companion, the Range Rover. It returns in 2008 with some interior trim adjustments and a two-model lineup.

Both models are powered by V-8s. The sport-themed SE and the luxury-oriented HSE both use a 4.4-liter, 300-horsepower V-8, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive with a central-locking differential that engages when conditions warrant maximum grip comes standard, as do traction and stability control.

A four-corner independent height-adjustable air suspension and Land Rover's exclusive Terrain Response system are also standard. The LR3 rides on an independent double-wishbone suspension, with height-adjustable rear air springs. Both rows of rear seats can fold into the floor to maximize the LR3's cargo-carrying abilities.

Front, side, and curtain airbags are among the standard safety features for the LR3.

For the 2008 model year, changes to the LR3 are largely found inside. The front passenger seat gets eight-way power adjustments, while the HSE also gets a power-adjustable steering column with a memory function. Some interior trim pieces are painted in a different finish; the speakers and air vents get revised appearance; and the HSE also gets new walnut trim on its center console, with black lacquer trim available at no charge. Lastly, the premium leather gets new stitching and an additional pocket on the driver seat.
