Model Review

Known as a Gelandewagen (or cross-country vehicle) at home, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class was originally built as a military vehicle. Offered for many years to European customers, Mercedes-Benz finally brought the vehicle to North America in 2002, and named it the G-Class. Appropriate to its military heritage, the G-Class continues to be built with heavy-duty truck-style suspension and axles for 2008. The solid front and rear axles and three locking differentials will appeal to fans of hard-core off-roading, which is where the G-Class shines brightest.

Several drivetrain updates bring the Mercedes-Benz G-Class up to date for the 2008 model year.

Both the G500 - with a 292-hp V-8 - and the 493-hp G55 AMG return for the new year. The latter gets a new seven-speed automatic transmission, while the AMG version sticks with its high-torque five-speed automatic. Both models get a new instrument set, a restyled steering wheel, a rearview camera, new taillights, and a hands-free phone system.

The stalwart G-Class is built by hand in Graz , Austria , and offers up the kind of extreme off-road capability that's proven useful for everyone from the Shah of Iran to Shaquille O'Neal. An automatic four-wheel-drive system with electronic locking differentials and low-range gearing is standard, as are anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronic Stability Program, a navigation system, and multi-contour power leather seats.

A Bluetooth wireless interface and special-order paint and trim are optional.
