Benefits of Driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz M-Class Sport Utility

The Mercedes-Benz 2008 M-Class is on-road friendly and a good family hauler, with improved ride and handling, while still maintaining its off-road ability. The ML320 CDI is notably frugal as well as luxurious, while the ML550 adds more luxury and power, and the ML63 AMG leads the pack in exclusivity, at about double the price of the ML350.

What's new for 2008?

For 2008 there are a number of equipment changes to Mercedes-Benz' V6 ML350 and diesel ML320 CDI, including larger, 19-inch wheels, a new grille and trim, and a standard power sunroof. A new ML550 model replaces the ML500, and it includes the new-generation, 382-horsepower, 5.5L V8, as well as additional equipment from in-house tuner AMG. The high-performance ML63 AMG carries over with no significant changes.

Model Strengths

  • Comfortable ride and seating
  • off-road ability
  • fuel-efficiency (ML320 CDI)
  • acceleration (ML550 and ML63).

Model Review

The family of Mercedes-Benz ML models, together referred to as the M-Class, cover a range of duties from family-hauling and cargo-hauling errands to moderate off-roading--all in comfort and luxury.

2008 Mercedes-Benz ML550: What's New

Source: The Car Connection

We've driven the new generation of Mercedes-Benz M-Class sport utes (see the link below), but this year a new engine and some minor tweaks inside have created the new ML550 - and TheCarConnection.com went to Idaho to sample the latest update.

When Mercedes-Benz engineers set out to restyle and improve the V-8 version of their successful M-Class sport-ute, they didn't waste time scratching their heads and waiting for divine intervention.

They went right to the heart of the matter - the ML's V-8 engine. Chucking it out and replacing it with a new V-8 displacing 5.5 liters, they bumped the ML's power up to 382 horsepower (26 percent more) and 391 pound-feet of torque (15 percent more) than before.

The new powerplant is mated to a smooth, seven-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift, drive-adaptive shift logic. Sometimes, the logical transmissions are anything but. While driving the ML550 at higher elevations and twisty mountain roads in Idaho, there wasn't a hint of faltering from the shifter, and the new engine pumped out smooth streams of power and torque at the touch of a paddle.

The ML550 also is equipped with full-time four-wheel-drive, three mechanical differentials, stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control. In concert with the AIRMATIC air suspension, they keep the ML planted on light off-roading, and even some of the hardcore stuff the Jeep crowds crow about. It helps that the ML550 sits on 255/55R-19 tires and wears big 13.8-inch front brakes and 13.0-inch rear vented discs.

Large and lovely

It's not a lightweight, weighing in at 4819 pounds and a gross weight of about 6300 pounds. But you can't be anorexic and expect to tow 7200 pounds like the ML550 can. You'd think it would get in the way of a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds, and a top end of 131 mph (electronically limited), but it doesn't. The punchline, of course, is the ML550's EPA mileage figures, 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway.

In overall size and room, the ML is more than competitive with the likes of Ford's Explorer, Jeep's Grand Cherokee, and their ilk. Its wheelbase is 114.7 inches and overall length is 188.5 inches. With the rear seats folded down, cargo volume is 72.4 cubic feet and 29.4 cubic feet with the seats upright.

The styling of the ML550 is much more aggressive than the ML500, using design cues from AMG versions of the M-Class. It has a vented, chrome grille with the largest Mercedes-Benz logo they've ever put on a vehicle smack-dab in the center. Plus, it wears AMG-styled front and rear bumpers, 19-inch five-spoke AMG wheels, running boards, sunroof, and square exhaust tips put where they should be, at each end of the rear bumper.

The luxurious interior is what you'd expect from a vehicle in this segment. Burl walnut wood trim and a multi-function steering wheel and dash display are included, as are an 80-watt audio system with AM/FM/CD stereo, two deep cupholders, dual rear cupholders, and too many other features to list in a short review.

The ML-Class has a NHTSA five-star crash rating and a four-star rollover rating. Plus, a rollover sensor can activate the belt tensioner and curtain airbags if the vehicle senses an imminent tumbling. Which is to be avoided, we should point out.

Base price for the 2008 ML550 is $53,175, including $775 destination and delivery charges. The M-Class sport utility vehicle is produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the first-generation M-Class began production in 1997.

Safety Ratings help

What do the Safety Ratings mean?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests:

Driver Crash Grade:

Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury.

Passenger Crash Grade:

Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger.

Rollover Resistance:

Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover.

Side Impact Crash Test - Front:

Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.

Side Impact Crash Test - Rear:

Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

Original Warranty  help
Original Warranty
An original warranty is the warranty associated with a vehicle when it is brand new. In addition to the original warranty, select items, like tires, are typically covered by respective manufacturers. Also, an act of Federal law sometimes provides protection for certain components, like emissions equipment.
The original warranty is often broken down into multiple sections, including:
Basic Warranty:
Typically covers everything except for parts that wear out through normal use of the vehicle. Examples of non-covered items are brake pads, wiper blades and filters.
Drivetrain Warranty:
This warranty covers items the basic warranty does not protect. Wear and tear items such as hoses will not be covered, but key items like the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft often will be.
Roadside Assistance:
The level of service differs greatly with this warranty, but many manufacturers offer a toll-free number that helps provide assistance in case you run out of gas, get a flat tire or lock your keys in the car.
Corrosion Warranty:
This warranty focuses on protecting you from holes caused by rust or corrosion in your vehicle's sheet metal.
Please check the owner's manual, visit a local dealership or look at the manufacturer's website to learn more about the specifics of the warranties that apply to a vehicle.

Basic 4 Years/50,000 Miles
Drivetrain 4 Years/50,000 Miles
Corrosion 4 Years/50,000 Miles
Roadside Assistance Unlimited Years/Unlimited Miles

Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Warranty  help
Certified Pre-Owned Warranty
To be eligible for Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) status, vehicles generally must be recent models with relatively low mileage. CPO vehicles must also pass a detailed inspection, outlined by the manufacturer, which is measured by the number of inspected points.
Warranty coverage can vary from one manufacturer to the next. While most certified pre-owned programs transfer and extend the existing new car warranty terms, others offer a warranty that simply represents an additional year and mileage value. Always check with the manufacturer for the specific warranties they offer.
Common features and benefits of Certified Pre-Owned warranties include:
Age/Mileage Eligibility
To even be considered for certification, a car must be a recent model year and have limited mileage. The exact requirements are established by individual manufacturers.
Lease Term Certified
Some manufacturers offer certified pre-owned cars for lease. The length of the lease is often shorter than a new car lease, but it will cost you less.
Point Inspection
These inspections entail a comprehensive vehicle test to ensure that all parts are in excellent working order. The point inspection list is simply a numbered list of exactly what parts of the car are examined. While many inspections range from a 70- to 150-point checklist, most are very similar and are performed using strict guidelines. Ask your local dealer about specific details.
Return/Exchange Program
Some manufacturers offer a very limited return or exchange period. Find out if you will get the sales tax and licensing/registration fees back should you return or exchange the car.
Roadside Assistance
Most certified pre-owned programs offer free roadside service in case your car breaks down while still under warranty.
Special Financing
Reduced-rate loans are available through many certified pre-owned programs. Manufacturer-backed inspections and warranties help eliminate the risks involved with buying pre-owned, so buyers who qualify can take advantage of the great offers.
Transferable Warranty
When a new car warranty transfers with the certification of the car and remains eligible for the next owner, it is known as a transferable warranty. Once the original transferable warranty expires, an extended warranty takes effect.
Warranty Deductible
This is the amount for which you are responsible when repair work is performed under the warranty. Some manufacturers require a deductible while others don't, so always ask.

The MBCPO Limited warranty provides vehicle coverage for 12 months and Unlimited vehicle miles and begins at the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty

Lease Term Certified Yes
Point Inspection Yes
Return/Exchange Program Yes. See dealer for details.
