Model Review

The 2008 S550 has a 382-horsepower 5.5L V8 engine, while the S600 gets a 5.5L twin-turbo V12 engine that makes 510 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. The S550's V8 is matched to a seven-speed automatic transmission, while the S600's V12 runs through a five-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available on the S550.

The flagship S-Class was redesigned for 2007, with a more formal exterior design with a longer wheelbase and overall length, along with a more intriguing interior design.

For 2008, the S-Class lineup adds one more model. The V-8-powered S550 with 382 horsepower, the V-12, 510-hp S600 and 604-hp S65 AMG, are joined by a new V-8 AMG model, the 518-hp S63 AMG.

The S-Class offers a panorama-style roof, Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, and heated/ventilated front seats with built-in massager. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system has been redesigned this year to cut its weight and reduce its fuel-economy penalty.

Other standout features of the S-Class include "smart" cruise control, called Distronic Plus, which can slow the car as traffic dictates, making it possible for the driver to "set and forget" the cruise control over a wider variety of operating conditions. There's also a new infrared night-vision system and concert-hall-quality 14-speaker Harmon Kardon surround sound stereo.
