What's new for 2008?

For 2008, the Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe and Eclipse Spyder convertible are carried over with only a few minor changes. The 3.8L V6 engine is now available with the SE trim, whereas it was only offered with the GT for 2007. Larger 18-inch wheels are standard on the top-of-the-range GT model, and the availability of electronic stability control has been expanded; it's now standard on both GT and SE-V6 models. A GT Premium Package is available on GT models and includes the SE's Sword Silver 18-inch wheels and aluminum scuff plates.

Model Review

The Eclipse comes either as a sporty coupe or a convertible (called the Spyder) and is available with a 162-horsepower, 2.4L four-cylinder or 263-horsepower, 3.8L V6 engine. The GS comes only with the four, the sporty GT only with the V6, and the loaded SE comes only as a coupe but with either engine. Both can be specified with manual or automatic transmissions, and all Eclipses have front-wheel drive. Spyder models have a power-operated soft top and space for two small adults.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe returns for the 2008 model year with base GS and V-6 GT versions - and a new SE version.

The GS continues to be powered by a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 162 horsepower while the sporty GT packs a 263-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6. Both engines feature Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve timing and electronic lift control. The in-line four can be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission with Sportronic manual-shift mode, while the GT offers the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed Sportronic automatic.

The SE can be ordered with either the 2.4-liter or the 3.8-liter engine, and with either manual or automatic transmission. It includes cosmetic upgrades like a dark charcoal leather and terra cotta interior, a front chin spoiler, a rear spoiler, 18-inch wheels, and distinct SE graphics. The 2.4-liter SE also gets the Eclipse GT's suspension tuning. The 3.8-liter SE adds stability control to its list of standard features.

All Eclipses are front-drivers, and share a MacPherson strut suspension design up front and a multi-link suspension with coil springs at the rear, stabilizer bars at both ends, and anti-lock disc brakes all around. Standard equipment includes side impact and side-curtain airbags, with items like heated leather seats and side-view windows and automatic climate control available.

For 2008, an 18-inch wheel is now standard on the GT versions. Tire pressure monitors are standard on all Eclipse coupes.

Though the Eclipse doesn't have the sharpest reflexes or handling, it offers an appealing mix of style, and with the V-6, excellent power, and straight-line performance.
