The 2008 Nissan Sentra is available in three models: a bargain-priced base 2.0 model, a better-equipped 2.0S, and the more luxurious 2.0SL. The base model includes standard power door locks and windows, air conditioning, and a CD sound system. S models step up to power mirrors, keyless entry, a sound-system upgrade, fog lights, cruise control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, while top SL models include 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, an Intelligent Key system, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. The CVT automatic is standard on the SL.

The compact Sentra sedan was new for 2007, with completely updated exterior sheetmetal, a new interior design, and updated drivetrains, including a standard six-speed manual gearbox to go with the 2.0-liter, 140-horsepower engine. A CVT is available optionally.

The new Sentra rides on a stretched wheelbase that's 5.9 inches longer than the last generation, is 2.3 inches longer in overall length, 3.2 inches wider and sits 4.0 inches taller, providing easier ingress and egress and enhanced headroom. The passenger volume of 97.7 cubic feet is 9.2 cubic feet more than the previous Sentra, too. Cargo room has also increased to 13.1 cubic feet, an increase of 1.5 cubic feet.

Front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags are standard as are manual air conditioning, 15-inch wheels, and satellite radio pre-wiring.

Premium options include leather-appointed seating, Intelligent Key keyless entry system, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System, and a Rockford Fosgate-powered audio system with six-disc changer, eight-channel amplifier and eight speakers.

For 2008, the Sentra lineup gets a fresh dose of standard equipment. Sentra 2.0 S models get standard anti-lock brakes, cruise control, a security system, and a front seatback pocket; a sunroof is a new option. Sentra SL models get standard XM hardware (monthly subscriptions are sold separately). All Sentras get a driver-side power window with one-touch auto up/down.

The base Sentra loses its six-speed manual option for 2008. The Sentra SE-R is covered separately.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury.
