Available in S and SL trim levels, the 2008 Nissan Versa comes in two body styles � the four door Sedan and the five door Hatchback. It features a 122 horsepower 1.8-liter gas-powered 4-cylinder equipped with either a 4-speed automatic, a 6-speed manual or a 1-speed Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) depending on the model. Nissan's 2008 Versa remains one of the most spacious sub-compacts available today, with the hatchback boasting 17.8 cubic feet of luggage space behind the standard 60/40 split fold-down rear seat and a very generous 50.4 cubic feet when configured in full cargo mode. The standard 1.8L engine is bigger and more powerful than its competitors' powerplants, and the Versa offers a roomier cabin and more head and legroom than most of its peers. What's new for 2008?

On the heels of a successful launch, the Nissan Versa enters 2008 with few changes. A $700 Sport Package is a new addition on the SL's option list and hatchbacks in S trim can now order cruise control. XM is now the only satellite radio provider for the model.

Nissan's Versa hatchback and sedan return for 2008, and the Sedan adds an available Sport Package, which had formerly been available only on the hatchback.

The sport Package includes a rear spoiler, lower side sill extensions, and fog lights. The Sedans with Sport packages get a new chin spoiler, while Hatchbacks get new front and rear-end treatments.

The Versa, new last year, keeps its standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard while Nissan's continuously variable Xtronic transmission is offered on SL models and a four-speed automatic is offered on the S versions.

The base price for the Versa Sedan 1.8 S is $12,550 with the six-speed manual transmission, and $13,350 with the four-speed automatic. The Versa Sedan 1.8 SL with Xtronic starts at $15,550.

There are four Versa Hatchback models for 2008. The Hatchback 1.8 S with a six-speed manual is $12,650, while the automatic version is $13,450. The SL with six-speed manual is $14,650, and the SL with Xtronic is $15,650.

Options on the Versa include Intelligent Key, Bluetooth compatibility, a Rockford Fosgate subwoofer, an MP3 player input jack, and XM satellite radio.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
