The Pontiac Solstice continues as two trims for 2008, with the base convertible sporting a five-speed manual transmission and a 2.4L DOHC aluminum four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower. The sporty Pontiac Solstice - older sibling to Saturn's sleek Sky roadster - is available in two versions for the 2008 model year, base and GXP.

The Solstice GXP comes standard with a turbocharged, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 260 horsepower. Also includes are GXP-specific 18-inch wheels with high-performance tires, GM's StabiliTrak stability control system, polished stainless steel dual exhaust tips, revised front and rear fascias, and GXP-specific interior trim, including "GXP" embroidered sport buckets.

Standard versions of the Solstice continue to be powered by the 2.4-liter, 177-horsepower "Ecotec" four-cylinder. Both versions of the Solstice come standard with a five-speed manual transmission, while a five-speed automatic is available optionally in both models as well. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard, with anti-lock brakes available as an option.

Though not as loaded in standard form as the Sky, the Solstice does come with a CD stereo, rear defroster, an adjustable steering column, and a considerably lower base price. A full range of options can be ordered, including power locks, mirrors and windows, keyless entry, cruise control, leather seats, a Monsoon audio system, GM's OnStar communications/safety system, and XM satellite radio.

Among the changes for 2008 are standard OnStar and XM satellite radio; a new MP3-compatible AM/FM/CD radio with an auxiliary jack; and standard tire pressure monitors. Stability control is now available on the base models ordered with anti-lock brakes, and is standard on the GXP.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
