It carries an EPA fuel economy rating of 25 city, 32 highway--the best of any sport-utility vehicle for 2008--and it's also quite affordably priced, starting at less than $25,000. In general, the Vue has a nice, controlled ride and good carlike handling, matched with an especially roomy interior and good towing ability for its size.

The 2008 Saturn Vue has been completely redesigned inside and out, with a more arced roofline and better-detailed front and rear styling, plus slightly longer and wider overall dimensions. GM also claims that the Vue now offers the widest range of powertrains in its segment.

The 2008 Vue Green Line (GL) may be a bit of a lame duck with the new Vue 2-Mode Hybrid coming this fall. The current model features a "mild-hybrid" system, meaning the small SUV never moves on electric power alone. The gasoline engine shuts off at a stop and gets a slight boost from the electric motor on acceleration.

The stop and start of the engine is seamless, and while there is no perceived electric boost, according to the gauges it is there. The word ECO lights up in green when you're driving economically - kind of a pat on the back for doing a good job. Keeping the ECO light on most of the time, I received my digital kudos but the reward did not come in fuel economy numbers. The Vue GL's mpg rating is 25/32 (city/hwy), but in mostly city driving, the very best the trip computer showed was a mediocre 22 mpg.

It's great to be driving a vehicle covered in hybrid badges, but the fuel economy is disappointing when compared to similar non-hybrid vehicles. Unfortunately, the Vue GL doesn't make up for the lower fuel economy with extra power. Output is about the same as a standard 4-cylinder Vue, and from a standstill the GL is rather sluggish to the point that it was difficult to pull onto a busy road.

Powertrain aside, the Vue GL is quite stylish, fitting nicely with the new look of the Saturn brand. Inside, seats are comfortable with a roomy back seat. Seating is available for five, and cargo space is plentiful. Folding the rear seats is a breeze, creating a large flat surface for that trip to a big-box store.

The GL is only available with front-wheel drive, and will set you back $4,000 more than the equivalent non-hybrid Vue. The Vue GL may be the least expensive hybrid SUV on the market, but if fuel economy and performance are more important than hybrid badges, the Vue GL may not be the right choice.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
