Subaru's 2008 Impreza, denoted '2.5 i,' and its high-performance sibling, the WRX, are available as either a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback. The four-door sedan is about six inches longer than the hatchback, and the trunk can now hold three golf bags. On both models, the rear seats can be folded forward for more cargo capacity; on hatchbacks they fold forward for a flat loading floor.

When you put 300-plus horsepower into a small, all-wheel-drive hatchback, it's no surprise you get a car with incredible performance. The surprise is that the STI is a great everyday car. Yes, the STI is at home on the track with its excellent handling and turbocharged engine, but most STI owners will likely spend more time on the street where they'll find a smooth ride, comfortable seats and room for four adults. The interior is considerably nicer than the previous generation, and the hatchback design provides easy access to the very useful cargo space. An excellent choice for someone looking for high performance in a car that can be driven every day. - Perry Stern

This car is a blast to drive. Not that the regular WRX is a boring car, but the STI has almost no turbo lag, the dual exhaust produces an amazing sound, and this rocket gets up to freeway speeds in the blink of an eye. The car simply wants to go, with the demonic exhaust note encouraging drivers to rev it up. In fact, with no traffic around it's hard to notice how fast the STI is actually traveling because 70 mph feels more like 45. The short-throw shifter allows smooth, quick gear changes, while the steering wheel feels heavier and sturdier than the WRX, telegraphing a feeling of powerful stability. - Johnny Pak

The STI is a raucous rocket. Subaru has definitely turned up the wick with 305 horsepower on tap, and lots of torque across a broad rev band. This car is so quick and fun to drive that I found myself squirting into little openings in traffic and using slight squeezes of the throttle to drive around lesser cars. The S-drive control makes it really interesting, toning down the power and throttle response to improve fuel economy but delivering full-punch with just a flick of the wrist. I was surprised by how much the throttle can be used to steer the STI in a corner, even under low cornering loads. I wasn't sure about the styling of the new Impreza 5-Door, but with the STI's fender flares, spoilers and 18-inch wheels, it really pulls together. - Mike Meredith

The latest-gen STI may look different from the outside, but from behind the wheel Subaru's AWD screamer is all WRX and better than ever. Grip, acceleration and the overall fun factor remain mind-bogglingly high, but now there's a welcome dose of civility to go with all that excitement. The ride's more refined, the interior materials are better (only just) and the NVH has been reduced a tad. Get out on an open road, however, and civility takes a backseat to rip-snorting performance. The new STI rails through corners with elevated levels of confidence and speed. Its engine and gearbox effortlessly complement the chassis, making quick work of any section of road that requires maximum point-to-point acceleration. Has the new STI gotten soft? Not at all. It remains one of the world's most intoxicating rides, but with this latest iteration it has quietly evolved into a more appealing everyday package. - Kim Wolfkill

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
