Model Review

Toyota's Avalon is available in four different models for 2008, ranging from comfortable and reasonably well-appointed to luxurious and technology-laden. Across the line, Avalons are powered by a 3.5L V6 engine with Dual VVT-i variable valve timing, making 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. This engine is paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission that provides improved performance and has a manual shift feature. As such, the Avalon can reach 60 mph in 7.7 seconds yet carries EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 28 highway.

Toyota's full-size Avalon returns for 2008 with a host of changes to its drivetrain, its front end, and its cabin.

A 3.5-liter V-6 engine with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and a dual-stage variable intake manifold is standard on the Avalon once again. It generates 268 horsepower, making it Toyota's most powerful V-6 ever, and it drives the front wheels via a new six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota has also upgraded the brakes for this model year for better response, less fade, and shorter stopping distances.

Front and side curtain airbags are standard in all Avalons, along with a driver-side knee airbag, and anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control.

The XL, XLS, Limited, and Touring versions of the Avalon are available once more. For 2008, all Avalons get a new face with revamped bumpers, headlamps and grille, along with new tint for the taillamps. Touring and XLS models get 17-inch alloy wheels, while Limited models gain chrome door handles. The XLS and Limited models get new woodgrain and a power passenger seat, while the Touring wears metallic trim on its dash.

Remote keyless entry is standard this year, as is a new AM/FM/CD changer with nine speakers, MP3 capability, and an auxiliary port for iPods. Major options include a DVD-based navigation system, a 360-watt JBL premium audio system, Dynamic Cruise Control, heated and ventilated seats, and a remote starter function.

Prices for the new Avalon range from $27,075 for the XL to $34,415 for the Limited.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.

Original Warranty Original Warranty An original warranty is the warranty associated with a vehicle when it is brand new. In addition to the original warranty, select items, like tires, are typically covered by respective manufacturers. Also, an act of Federal law sometimes provides protection for certain components, like emissions equipment.
