Model Review

Toyota Tacomas are well-regarded in the mid-size pickup segment, as evidenced by their traditionally strong resale values. For 2008, all three of the typical pickup body styles are offered: regular cab, Access Cab (extended cab), and Double Cab (crew cab). The 2.7L four-cylinder versions are available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The regular cabs are only available with the four-cylinder. The 4.0L V6 is available with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. All body types are available with a six-foot composite bed, and the Double Cabs also offer a shorter five-foot bed. Model offerings range from the workaday four-cylinder two-wheel-drive regular cab, starting at less than $15,000, all the way up to the V6 four-wheel-drive Double Cab that can be optioned north of $32,000. Within that range, there's something for nearly everyone with an interest in this size pickup.

Redesigned in 2005, the compact Tacoma pickup continues for 2008 with no changes but with a very slight rise in price.

For 2007, the mid-size Toyota truck received minor tweaks including redesigned seats, a two-toned gauge panel, and chrome trim, along with an off switch for its stability control.

As before, the standard engine in the 2008 Tacoma is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 159 horsepower. The optional 4.0-liter V-6 comes in at 236 horsepower. The base tires are 15-inchers, while 16-inchers are available on PreRunner and 4WD models.

Anti-lock brakes are standard, as are variable wipers, a composite pickup bed, an AM/FM/CD player and a tilt/telescope wheel. Tire pressure monitors, curtain airbags and stability control are among the included safety gear on all models.

The Tacoma's price ranges from $14,280 for the 2WD four-cylinder with a manual transmission to $26,115 for the Double Cab 4WD V-6 automatic long bed.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
