What's new for 2008?

The 2.0T four-cylinder engine is no longer offered on the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta line, only on the performance-oriented GLI model, but the Jetta's 2.5L five-cylinder engine now gets a 20-horsepower boost in power, to 170 horsepower. The top-of-the-range SEL model is now offered only with an automatic transmission, and Climatronic climate control and leather upholstery are no longer standard on the SEL or the GLI. A power recline feature for the driver's seat is now standard through the Jetta line.

Volkswagen's Jetta was revamped in mid-2005, and VW's embarked on a range of updates for 2008 meant to improve its price positioning against its main competitors - cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

On the base Jetta S and the midline SE, the only engine available is a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder with 177 pound-feet of torque. The former 2.0-liter turbo four has been removed as an option, and will only be available on the higher-performance GLI edition of the Jetta. A five- or six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic can be teamed to either engine, though the automatic is limited to SEL models for '08. A dual-clutch gearbox can also be ordered with the 2.0-liter turbo four.

New body trim in black has been applied to the S and SE models. A 2.5 badge is also added to the S, as are new 16-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Deleted from all Jettas for 2008: Climatronic automatic climate control, leather seatings, and Homelink. Power seat recliners are standard on all Jettas, however.

Options now include a sunroof on the S model, and a cold package on the S model. The SEL offers optional 17-inch wheels and a premium sound system with 250 watts of power and an amplifier.

All '08 Jettas feature front side-impact airbags, full-length curtain/head airbags, and anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Electronic stability control is optional on the base and mid-trim models, standard on GLI.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
