Model Review

The Volkswagen Passat is available in two different body styles for 2008, a sedan and a wagon; both are offered in four different models: Turbo, Comfort, Lux, and VR6. Turbo, Comfort, and Lux models come with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine making an impressive 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Turbo models come with either a six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic automatic, but Comfort and Lux models are only offered with the automatic. VR6 models get the latest version of Volkswagen's engine of the same name, a 280-horsepower, 3.6L DOHC V6, hooked up to a six-speed automatic and the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system for good all-weather traction and good handling balance with the added power.

Volkswagen's Passat wagon returned to the lineup for the 2007 model year, so the changes for 2008 are mostly minor.

For starters, all Wagons now come in one of four trim levels: Turbo, Komfort, Lux, or VR6. All Passat wagons get a new leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, manual side and rear sunshades, a power 12-way driver seat, and a temporary spare added to the standard equipment list.

By trim level, the Turbo wagon is now the only one available with a manual gearbox. The Turbo sports new interior and chrome window trim, and new 16-inch wheels, while heated front seats are now an option.

The Komfort edition wears new 17-inch wheels and optional seat heaters, while the Lux edition includes a multifunction three-spoke steering wheel and an optional Dynaudio sound system. The VR6 edition gets heated washer nozzles, optional bi-xenon adaptive headlights, and adaptive cruise control.

VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive is only available on the VR6 wagon this model year.

The standard Passat engine is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder developing 200 horsepower. It can be teamed with either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic with Tiptronic manual-shift capability. The 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 comes only with the six-speed automatic but is about a second faster to 60 mph than the four-cylinder/manual transmission version of the Passat, which gets there in about 7.6 seconds.

Front side and full-length head/curtain airbags are standard; side airbags for back seat passengers are optional on the Passat.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
