The Rabbit returned to U.S. buyers for the 2007 model year-while the rest of the world still enjoys its subtle pleasures under the Golf badge. For 2008, the changes are relatively modest. The most important one to enthusiasts out there who can't afford the sporting GTI is that the base Rabbit now makes 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque from its 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder engine. Transmission choices include a standard five-speed manual or, optionally, a six-speed automatic.

A new S trim level designation applies to the Rabbit. All Rabbits are front-wheel drive, and carry standard features like air conditioning and an eight-speaker stereo with CD player and MP3 capability. Tire-pressure monitors are added this year, while stability control remains an option. Traction control, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, and front-side and full-length curtain/head airbags are also included in the Rabbit's base price.
