What's new for 2008?

Inside there are larger door pockets, a redesigned center console area, and improved air vents, plus the clock has been repositioned to the audio display. Audio systems have been improved with a standard auxiliary input and MP3 capability.

The Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon are both offered in two primary models for 2008: the 2.4i and the T5. The 2.4i models get a 2.4L five-cylinder engine making 168 horsepower, matched with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Sporty T5 models get a 227-horsepower, 2.5L turbocharged five-cylinder, offered only with the five-speed auto. Both automatic transmissions have Geartronic manual control. Both models have standard front-wheel drive, but the T5 is available with all-wheel drive as well.

Volvo says the 2008 edition of its S40 sedan will be more "grown up." In Volvo-speak, that seems to include more power and more interior storage space.

Under the hood of the base 2.4i, a 2.4-liter in-line five continues to provide 168 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. Its new front fascia, grille, and spoiler are framed by new headlamps and taillights. Inside, where Volvo admits interior storage was an issue, a new center console and revised set of door panels add more bins and more room for stuff-10 CDs, for example, even though the audio system now includes an iPod jack and MP3 capability. A newly positioned clock, better air vents, tire pressure monitors and new 16-inch wheels are standard, while Volvo's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is an option.

Higher-powered S40s with the turbocharged, 2.5-liter in-line five-the T5 and T5 AWD models-see their power increase from 218 to 227 horsepower. The exterior refinements carry over to the turbo models, which also get active bi-xenon headlights, which swivel in the direction the car is steered, and Dynaudio sound systems, which bowed in the C70 convertible. Sirius satellite radio is gratis for six months on turbo cars as well, while BLIS is an option. The AWD model gets a standard five-speed Geartronic automatic; the six-speed manual option has been deleted.
