A new six-speed automatic transmission and a more powerful ethanol-capable V8 engine head the list of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 refinements for the 2009 model year. Regular cab, extended cab and crew cab trims are available with two-wheel or four-wheel-drive, depending on the trim. As Chevrolet Silverado 1500 photos show, there is a choice of three cargo bed lengths � short, regular or long � and four distinctive trim levels. A range of engines is available: a 4.3L V6 with 195 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, which can be upgraded to a 4.8L V8 with 295 hp and 305 lb-ft, or a 5.3L V8 with 315 hp and 338 lb-ft. Optional on some trims is a 6.0L V8 with 367 hp and 375 lb-ft or a 6.2L V8 with 403 hp and 417 lb-ft. A four-speed automatic transmission with a tow/haul setting comes standard on all Silverado 1500 pickups, while a six-speed automatic transmission is available on select trims. Properly equipped, a Silverado 1500 can tow up to 10,700 pounds. Fuel economy estimates range from 15 mpg city/21 mpg hwy and 17 mpg combined for a crew-cab XFE to 12/19/14 mpg for a 4WD Silverado 1500 equipped with the 6.2L V8.

What's new for 2009?

Model Review

The most striking feature of the 2009 Silverado is the interior. The cabin offered on the top LTZ trim is similar to that currently offered on GM's full-size sport-utility vehicles such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, and offers standard luxury features like power heated front leather seats, six-disc CD/MP3-capable audio system and heated windshield washers, while top crew cab LTZ models add rain-sensing wipers and a rear-seat audio system. LTZ models are further differentiated by a completely different instrument panel and door panels, a huge, 20.1-liter center console storage area, and upgraded five-liter glove box. Ultrasonic rear parking assist is available.

Safety Ratings What do the Safety Ratings mean? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) performs independent crash testing of new vehicles and then assigns them a score based on their performance. The overall crash test rating is based on how a vehicle performs in the following tests: Driver Crash Grade: Measures the chance of a serious injury to a crash test dummy that is placed in a driver's seat and driven into a fixed barrier at 35 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less chance of injury. Passenger Crash Grade: Similar to the driver crash grade, only now the focus is on the passenger. Rollover Resistance: Simulates an emergency lane change to measure the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over. A five-star rating means there is 10 percent or less risk of rollover. Side Impact Crash Test - Front: Focuses on the front side of a vehicle. It simulates crashes that can occur in intersections by striking a 3,015-pound weight against the side of a vehicle at 38.5 MPH. A five-star rating means there is 5 percent or less chance of injury. Side Impact Crash Test - Rear: Similar to the front side impact test only now the focus is on the rear passenger.
