Completely redesigned for 2009, the Infiniti FX35 midsize luxury crossover SUV gets more power and a new seven-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the FX35 boasts a plethora of new high-tech standard and optional features, including a hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time satellite traffic information, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and distance-control assist. Infiniti FX35 fuel economy ratings for the RWD are 16 mpg city/23 hwy and 19 in combined driving, while the AWD is rated 16/21/18 mpg. The luxurious five-passenger FX35 has refined, leather-appointed interior that comes equipped with eight-way power front seats, including driver's side two-way power lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, reclining rear seatbacks, 11-speaker Bose audio system with XM satellite radio and numerous conveniently located storage compartments. Safety features include traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes with brake assist, front seat-mounted side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

These SUVs are short on utility but high on sport -- as in sports car. The FX lacks a third-row seat and real cargo space, but it makes up for it in horsepower and handling. The base level FX35 has a 3.5L V6 engine that turns out 303 hp (28 more than last year) and 262 lb-ft of torque (6 less than last year). The new FX50's 5.0L V8 has 390 hp on tap and 369 lb-ft of torque, making it Infiniti's most powerful engine ever. Its off-road capabilities may be limited (no low gear, for example), but it screams through the twisties and delivers a high level of interior features, many of which are standard.

What's new for 2009?

Infiniti's FX line of SUVs got a complete overhaul for the 2009 model year -- including a new trim level, the FX50. When the FX35 was introduced in 2003, it came in one trim level with a load of standard features. With this latest version, trim levels have been expanded to two: the FX35, with a more powerful 3.5L V6, and the FX50, with a brand-new 5L V8.The 7-speed automatic transmission is also new for 2009. The exterior of the FX has been updated, but it still retains its futuristic concept-car looks, and the interior has been upgraded to the same level as the Infiniti G series.

Model Review

While it may look like an SUV, the Infiniti FX behaves more like a sports sedan. The original incarnation of the FX, which was on the market from 2003 to 2008, had a stiff ride and impressive performance; in this year's overhaul, Infiniti improved the ride and upped the performance even further.
